Computer randomly freezes up when connected to my wireless network

Hi, I'm new here and I could really do with some help.

I have a really irritating problem where my desktop computer completely freezes up when connected to my wireless network. The computer wired to the router and my laptop are both fine when connected.

I thought I had fixed the problem when we changed ISP's as it stopped happening. The changes we made when changing ISP's were the router (although it was the same as our old one, it probably had a different firmware version), the ISP settings in the router and we also set up some dynamic IP addresses under the TCP/IP options so that we could set up port-forwarding.

However, today we discovered we no longer could access web pages (but we could still download via limewire etc.) and that was down to the TCP/IP protocol not working correctly so we had to re-set the IP addresses of our 3 machines to be automatically configured. This fixed the problem. We also changed a few of the settings in the router such as the IP address of our ISP (which is now automatically configured) and upgraded the firmware version.

As a result of fixing our internet, my computer has randomly started freezing up again.

By freezing up, I mean everything stops and the screen stays frozen (and never unfreezes). This includes the mouse cursor.

I am guessing that it is not a problem with my adaptor, because it was working fine until we made those changes today. Also that it is not a problem with the actual router because we are using the same one as usual, just with a different firmware version and some different settings. It also cannot be down to viruses, spyware etc. as I regularly check for these and very rarely find any problems. I have tried obvious things like scandisk and defrag, but no success.

If anyone could help me out, it would be greatly appreciated! I'm desparate to get it fixed as I'm off to university in September and would like to be able to do my work on this desktop without it freezing up in the middle of writing an essay and having to re-do the whole thing again!

I can supply any other information if needed, I'm not brilliantly familiar with networking terms but I am quite computer-literate

Do you have the affected computer set for dhcp or static ip?

It is now set to DHCP, along with the other two computers in the house. It was a static IP up until yesterday when we had to change it to fix our internet problem.

I see "limewire"....P2P software will lead to your PC being infested with ad/spy/malware/viruses/worms. The first place I would look...is uninstalling any/all P2P software...and then cleaning your PC with several quality antivirus and anti-spyware programs. Doing all your windows updates too.

I don't even use limewire...I simply downloaded it ages ago and I only used it the other day to prove that we had a TCP/IP problem (by connecting to the limewire network and not downloading anything) and that it wasn't a problem with our ISP.

I have up-to-date antivirus and spyware applications, as well as a firewall. My computer is scanned with each at least once a week and there have been no problems.

My dad has limewire on his computer (on the same network) for the same reason I described as above, and he doesn't have the problem that I have with my desktop. My desktop was freezing up before I even had limewire installed, and I have never used any other P2P software.

Hope this helps to eliminate limewire as the culprit behind this problem.
