What's that magical program?
Someone on this board introduced me to a wonderful program that's built into Win98 to check your OS and report on anything that's amiss. Can someone tell me what it is? It begins "ms....." I ran into the same missing files on my reinstall of Win98 that I did on the first install, you know the ones: vnetsup.vxd, dhcpcsvc.dll, vnetbiol.vxd, etc. Now my OS won't start even in safe mode, so I'm having to boot from my 98 start up floppy and transfer files manually from the CD to windows/system.

I used msconfig and got the three files that were missing transferred from the CD to Windows/System. However, I still get the error message that msnp32.dll isn't available and that Mocrosoft Networking also isn't available. I recall that I had to get the registry to recognize msnp32.dll once before. Anyone know what program does that?

the first thing i would do would be to boot up with your win98 startup disk, and run Scandisk (type "SCANDISK" at the "A:\" prompt) and tell it to do a full surface scan.
if you have developed bad sectors on your hdd since the last full surface scan was done, the data that is in/on a bad sector will be corrupt and/or inaccessible, and windows or whatever OS will not know the sectros are bad and write data to them. when you do a surface scan, the bad sectors are located and made inaccessible from your boot record/sector so your OS will not write data to them.
this probably wont help you get into your current windows install, but it will assure you the next time you do install windows, it wont make the same mistake twice (writing data to bad sectors).

If Iam right that dll belongs to the explorer. Try running a repair on the explorer. If that dose not work and the explorer starts acting up you may have to reinstall it. Or if you just updated the explorer. This could be the old dll used by it. So it won't matter that you can not replace it. Hope this helps you.
