R.I.P. Shorty 2/11/1995 - 5/24/2007

Post by fastchevy »

I put my dog to sleep today. I've had him 12 years...longer than any other pet I've ever had, longer than my son's alive and nearly as long as I was married.

He had been dragging his back legs for quite a while and I finally got the guts to end his suffering. The vet said surgery was the only alternative at this point.

That was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do.

I don't have any puppy pics...Janey took most of the pics of the early years of our marriage. In this one he's about 2 years old

This was taken about 2 hours before he passed away.

I buried him the backyard this evening...

Sorry to hear about that. It always sucks to go through that. I had a friend staying here while he had to to that maybe a month ago.

 Sorry for your loss FC. I know it can be as hard as losing a family member, especially since dogs are so eager to please and just want to be part of the family. RIP shorty.

Man that sucks, I just recently had to put my Dalmatian Jake to sleep. He was 11 years old, I think sometimes I would have gone insane without him being there for me..... as you said, hardest thing I ever had to do.

RIP

Sorry man, I've done that way too many times. My dad had to bury his week old pony a while back and he was a real mofo to be around after that.

That's the only thing I hate about having dogs and cats, they can't live as long as us.

But for the short time they do spend with us, makes up for the larger amount of time we won't be with them.

Sorry for your loss.

Hi Jason. Sorry to hear about the pooch. :( You did the right thing though. I hate to see animals suffer.

Hopefully you can find something warm and fuzzy to snuggle up with to take your mind off Shorty. ;)

I too, am sorry. I had to do that to my cat of 13 years that I had since he was a new born. I feel like I betrayed my best friend, but he was in respiratory failure from a chest infection.

Ever since I've owned my first dog and had to put it down, I've felt like the betrayer.

The guilt was (and still is) overwhelming. I keep thinking that I could have done more. I could have been a better owner. I could have made his/her life better by doing this or that. I know that when I get that puppy, I will outlive it. Still I do... knowing there will be all that pain when the end comes near.

However... I'd rather go through the pain over and over than miss one single day without them around.

I have had two dogs for years. One died very suddenly on a Saturday morning. The remaining dog was (until it's death) checking rooms and behind chairs to see if she was hiding from him. That went on for years. I felt terrible. I would rather have my pooch die before me than have the little guy checking around my desk and in the garage to see if I'm working in one of the rooms.

Pets are so cool. I can't imagine living a day without one.

Again... my heart felt condolences for your loss.

sorry to hear of this .. hope this helps

----------------------------------------------

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Thanks everyone :)
It will be wierd without him. When I got up today first thing I thought of was I needed to take him out to use the bathroom. I will still have the mentality that I need to go straight home after work to let him out to use the bathroom too...at least for a little while.
