Upgrading to Charter 10 mb

Post by JusPCs »

I just upgraded to Charter's 10 mb package, but I'm not seeing any increase in speed tests, but it seems faster. I'm using the Charter provided Ambit 60678EU modem, an AMD 4400 X2 with 2048 megs RAM.
Can anyone tell me if I need to upgrade the modem, or do I just need to change settings with TCP Optimizer? I tried this, but it seemed to hurt more than help.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

To do a tracert, click 'Start' and then 'Run'. Type "cmd" into the box and click 'ok'.

A DOS black screen will appear. Type after the C:\>

tracert http://www.yahoo.com

and press enter key

When test is completed, move mouse cusor to the DOS black screen, click right and choose 'select all'.

Move mouse cursor to the Quick Reply box of this forum, click right and 'paste'.

Your modem has been placed too close to some other electrical device and is being affected by electromagnetic interference. Power off your modem and relocate it a few feet away from any other electrical devices including the router and cordless phone.

When you use my custom setting with TCP Optimizer, you do not need to use the speed slider bar.

Reboot your comp and do another speed test and tracert and post the results.

Your speed is getting better. Upload is almost 90% of your capped speed.

If you are using a cordless phone connected to the splitter, disconnect it and see if your download speed will increase.

this is cable, not DSL. I have no phone other than a cell, and if you check the second speed test it was right back down. I truly think the modem is holding me back. When I had the 3 mb package I was hitting 3.5 consistently.

Post the log of your cable modem. Need to check the power levels and signal to noise ratio.

umm...how do I get a log from my modem? I'm assuming I have to connect the ethernet cable to the modem from the PC, and enter some IP?

Check for default log in details for the brand and model of your cable modem at this site:

Search and download the user guide for your model of modem:

http://www.ambitbroadband.com/broadband/downloads.php

When you upgraded your speed, were you issued a new modem? Some older modems are not able to support 10 mbps speed.

there is no info in the user's manual as to interfacing the modem, only instructions on installing drivers in the event you need to use USB.

evidently this info is for roadrunner, it doesn't work for charter issued modems

The power level for downstream is high. Desirable range is at -8dB to +8dB.

Contact your ISP and ask them to replace your modem.

Thank you very much. Should I just purchase my own? If so what brand/model. It's cheaper to purchase your own anyway.
I'm grateful to you for all you've done.
