Rather un-amusing keyboard antics!!

Post by caveman »

I booted My Laptop last night and got a load of cloured stripes vertically on the screen, re-booted and all was well.....seemingly!?!? :wth: :wth:

Logged into my Email and noticed that my left shift key gives me a . (period) and when I type the first letter of my surname (a "D") I get the period and four letters, DKNV. Interestingly enough, I get the same results in MS Word :wth: :wth:

The right shift key brings up a working with I.E 7 box in I.E. and in MS Word I get the horrifyingly unhelpful office assistant!

I was typing this on the said laptop but after 3 attempts at it wandering off page to somewhere else and Trying to type even remotely normally on a crazy keyboard, I gave up and wandered upstairs!

Oh and changing/uninstalling/reinstalling keyboards doesn`t help

Anyone got any ideas??

I`m running AV and spyware tools as I type.

Acer Aspire 1350, 40GB 5400, 768MB DDR 333, AMD xp2600M

Many thanx

Al

What happens if you plug in a regular PS2 keyboard, or USB keyboard?

Well it`s funny you should ask that.... I thought to try it originally but then clean forgot all about it!!!

It works fine with my Logitech USB Keyboard!

Looks like it`s the onboard keyboard that`s ailing then eh!?!?!

Hmmm, wonder how I can look at that then?? Cant` semm to see anything obvious.

Yup...probably something physical with the laptops keyboard. Haven't peeled apart an Acer lappy keyboard in a long time..can't remember how they release. But usually the keyboards can lift up without taking apart too much. Or at least try to press down firmly on various areas of the keyboard to try to reseat things.

Taken a fall lately?

`s ok, I got it...

I pulled it out and give it all a good clan out with compressed air, still no go except instaed of the four letters, now I only get 2 or none! :wth: :wth: :wth:

Anyways, as for falls, not for a Loooonnnggg time, it`s beena rock solid worker really, it`s had a few bumps once where I dropped it altogether and it snapper the end off my WLAN card, that was fun putting back together, luckily It only broke the antenna and the 2 LED`s, so it wasn`t too bad.

The other was more of a bang against the desk as I was picking it up a bit quick!

Either way, the latest one was a good 6 months or more ago and it`s been fine since.

It doesn`t get used that much and there`s no spillages, it`s like new really....looks like I`ll have to get hold of Acer eh!?!

Ah well, thanx anyways, if you stumble accross one anywhere...lemme kno!! :thumb: :rotfl:

Many keyboards attach to the system board via a thin ribbon cable...often with a friction fitting..a sort of clamp fittin snaps off...cable slips out..visa versa. See if you can get out the ribbon cable..clean the ends..re-assemble.

The keys on this one spring fed from bubbles? Or the thin plastic scissor like springs?

Seems like both from what I can see.....

There`s like a little rubber dome under each key and the scissor springs either side.

I`m just gonna give the ribbon cable a clean with some IPA, I can only do one end as the KB end is bonded to the inside of the KB.

I just dropped Acer a line so I don`t know if/when they`ll get back to me.

Done the ribbon with IPA, and still the same, looks like it`s shot!

Ah well, onto ebay in the meantime I think!

Many thanx again

Alrighty then, bit of an update....

Got a replacement KB off ebay and get the same results    I am assured that it`s working.

Anyway, stripped down the laptop to it`s component parts and cleaned/checked/reseated everything/anything in sight.

got what i thought was the KB controller out and looked it over and reseated it.

I also removed the HSF assembly and there was barely any compound on it so I cleaned it all off and re-applied some decent stuff and so far the fans haven`t come on since boot up...about 20 minutes or more, usually it`s going great guns by now :thumb: :thumb: :D

Anyway, the long and short of it is, my fault is still present, with both KB`s so I`m lost.

Anyone know a use for a laptop with a buggered keyboard
