. also I notice unviewed threads icons show as envelope opened and then i when i view them the icon becomes blue and closed enevelope?

Some Flash banners take the top layer, there is no way that I'm aware of to prevent it.

As for the thread icons, it is a feature to distinguish unread threads.

but its backwards if the thread has been read the icon used should be the open envelope if it hasnt been read then the envelope should be unopen
