WinMe killed my cable modem??

Post by medmike »

Just installed WinMe update, and then my cable modem wouldn't work. Cable guys checked out and said it's a software problem.
Any ideas?

P3 667
NIC= 3COM 3C90X using Surfboard SB3100

I had a beta of WinMe in June and it worked OK.

Thanks,
Medmike

MIne works fine but I guess that doesn't help you. Have you tried reinstalling the NIC drivers from the old Win ME?

Have you checked Device Manager for any conflicts? I SERIOUSLY doubt that WinME blew away the SB3100.

I doubt it's caused by WinMe.. maybe .5% chance... but those Cable Guys have like so LOTTLE knowledge in configuration / software / O/S stuffs... Sorry if any of u are offended.. . Just SOME cable guys..not all okay? ... well if u can c green light from the cable modem, which means the modem is cool. Go chk on the network / IP configuration in your O/S... oh by the way, if those cable guys installed their own software (like what they did to mine a while b4 -- I have ATT@home cable modem).. this software is absolutely useless. There should be a configuration sheet (with IP, gateway, DNS, subnet Mask) that came with u ISP, just configure ur network seetings and reboot (if u r using win9X / WinMe) and u should be flying again.

Mike, the thing is real, WMe changes some SW setting. So the cable guys are right. You may tell them though, that it does not change the fact: you cannot use their cable and want to cancel it. These guys usually know how to lay the cable and how to unwrap the modem and connect it. But if you tell them that you consider cancellation, they will escalate the matter till it reaches somebody who does know the SW.
For starteres, check if you have the correct settings in winipcfg and Network. If not, make your settings "default".
