Home XP SP2

I connect via a router to a cable modem.

2 other computers in the network work fine.

1 computer (the Home XP) can ping inside the network and can retrive IP's of google and espn.com, so the DNS works, but I can't browse the web on it (have both IE7 and Firefox 2 installed). So this makes me think it's a software issue on that 1 computer.

I have removed all firewalls and disabled the Windows firewall, but still can't connect to the web (IRC and pinging still works).

Any suggestions?

In "run" type cmd and hit enter, type ipconfig /all

what does it say for DNS?

The DNS is 167.206.3.161 and 167.206.3.160 for the computer that's not working. That is the same DNS on this computer I am responding to you on.

I don't believe it's a DNS problem as I can ping google.com and get an IP, but can't connect to it via a web browser.

I must be missing something very simple.

As it turns out, Sygate firewall was the problem. It was not showing running in task manager and it wasn't in the startup dialog box. I just decided to remove it from Add/Remove problems and restarted and voila.

Thanks for the help but I guess I just overstepped a very important detail.

In my case it was ZoneAlarm's preloaded vsdata vxd file :irate: on Win98 that caused the problem. The problem occurred a few minutes after Windows started, *if* the visible GUI part of ZA was not allowed to run.

I believe that in the case of Win2k/XP, ZA's vsdata would run as a service.
