Optimizing my DSL Connection. Please Advice!

Post by slackerz »

Firstly, I have a DSL Connection [PPoE], my ISP is a local one and its advertised speed is 1500kbps/256kbps.

Here's the TCP/IP Analyzer test for my connection.

Code: Select all

TCP properties for IP = XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Browser/OS = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322)
Notes: Read the Analyzer FAQ if the above is not your IP address.
Your IP (XXXXXXXXXX) appears to be behind a web proxy server (XXXXXXXXXXX) and results shown might not be for your system.

TCP options string = 020405ac0103030101010402

MTU = 1492
MTU is optimized for PPoE DSL broadband. If not, consider raising MTU to 1500 for optimal throughput.

MSS = 1452
MSS is optimized for PPPoE DSL broadband. If not, consider raising your MTU value.

Default TCP Receive Window (RWIN) = 128480
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 1 bits (scale factor of 2)
Unscaled TCP Receive Window = 64240

For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other RWIN values that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
511104 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
255552 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
127776 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
 63888 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product (Note this is not a speed test):

Your TCP Window limits you to: 5139.2 kbps (642.4 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your TCP Window limits you to: 2055.68 kbps (256.96 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 51 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 00000000 (0)

My operating system is Windows XP with SP 1. I'm just only using TCP Optimizer with settings to 1500kbps. I've done all the tweaks on the sticky thread except this tweak.
- FORWARD BUFFER MEMORY TWEAK:

This value controls how much RAM TCP/IP uses for storing packet data in the router packet queue.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters]

"ForwardBufferMemory"=dword:00024a00
"NumForwardPackets"=dword:0000024a
"MaxForwardBufferMemory"=dword:00024a00
"MaxNumForwardPackets"=dword:0000024a

*Note - These values should be adjusted according to your MTU value, the above are based on a MTU of 1500. For further explanation please read HERE.
I don't understand it, how do you do it on regedit?

Thats all and I'll appreciate any advice given. Thanks in advance. :D

EDIT: I've done several speedtests over at dslreports and I average a speed of 1100kbps for download and 110 for uploads.

Is your ISP Singnet? Try the following custom settings with TCP Optimizer:

General Settings tab:
Custom settings - check
Modify All Network Adapters - check
network adapter selection - your NIC
MTU 1492
TTL - 64
TCP Receive Window -87120
MTU Discovery - Yes
Black Hole Detect - No
Selective Acks - Yes
Max Duplicate ACKs - 2
TCP 1323 Options:
Windows Scaling - checked
Timestamps - uncheck
Advanced Settings tab:
Max Connections per Server - 10
Max Connections per 1.0 Server - 20
LocalPriority - 5
Host Priority - 6
DNSPriority - 7
NetbtPriority - 8
Lan Browsing speedup - optimized
QoS: NonBestEffortLimit - 0
ToS: DisableUserTOSSetting - 0
ToS: DefaultTOSValue - 136
MaxNegativeCacheTtl - 0
NetFailureCacheTime - 0
NegativeSOACache Time - 0
LAN Request Buffer Size - 32768
Then select "Apply Changes" and reboot to take effect

You might also try the following settings, a lot of times it isn't worth enabling Windows Scaling when your RWIN isn't much above 65535.

General Settings tab:

Custom settings - check
Modify All Network Adapters - check
network adapter selection - your NIC
MTU - 1492
TTL - 64
TCP Receive Window - 63888
MTU Discovery - Yes
Black Hole Detect - No
Selective Acks - Yes
Max Duplicate ACKs - 3
TCP 1323 Options:
Windows Scaling - uncheck
Timestamps - uncheck

Advanced Settings tab:

Max Connections per Server - 10
Max Connections per 1.0 Server - 20
LocalPriority - 5
Host Priority - 6
DNSPriority - 7
NetbtPriority - 8
Lan Browsing speedup - optimized
QoS: NonBestEffortLimit - 0
ToS: DisableUserTOSSetting - 0
ToS: DefaultTOSValue - 92
MaxNegativeCacheTtl - 0
NetFailureCacheTime - 0
NegativeSOACache Time - 0
LAN Request Buffer Size - 32768

Then select "Apply Changes" and reboot to take effect.

VERY IMPORTANT TO DO THE FOLLOWING:

1. Under your LAN connection - properties - general tab, uninstall all the protocols there that you do not need. For a stand alone pc all you need is Internet Protocol TCP/IP.

2. Open IE and select tools - internet options - connections - LAN settings, make sure NOTHING there is checked.

3. ALWAYS connect your modem via ethernet (NIC) and make sure you have the latest drivers for your NIC from the manufacturer and set your duplex mode to "auto". If you are using a router make sure you have the latest firmware.

4. Clean out your temporary internet files with CrapCleaner.

5. Power cycle your modem i.e. unplug it for at least 15 seconds.

6. Download, update and scan with SpyBot S&D 1.4, Ad-Aware SE 1.06 & ewido anti-spyware 4.0 to remove any spyware then install and update SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 to stay spyware FREE.

7. Make sure you do the faster web page tweak in our Help & Tips page.

8. If you aren't currently using a firewall then I suggest you install Kerio Personal Firewall 2.1.5, it's FREE and uses next to no resources.

9. Do a FREE online virus scan from BitDefender Online Scan and remove all that it finds.

10. Make sure you have ALL of the latest Windows Updates.

11. Just an FYI, if you are using Zone Alarm for a firewall it can noticeably drop your speeds.

Singnet yes. Well, I've tried both the advice given and surfing is more smooth and fast now, I'm not too sure about speeds though, its still lingers around 1000kbps - 1100kbps.

EDIT: Bad news guys, after those tweaks, my average tested speeds were 1000kbps.

Where did you do your speedtests?

As you are located in Singapore, you need to carry out your tests with a site in Singapore in order to gauge your performance.

Tests done at overseas sites, especially in USA, cannot shown optimum values due to high traffic at the international gateway router.

I finally found an FTP and my speeds are 250kbps average for all file size.

Here's the link to the FTP - ftp://ftp.singnet.com.sg/speedtest/

When testing speed by downloading files, you need to download a file at least 100 times your bandwidth of 1500 kbps - ie 20 MB or more.

Your stablised download speed will be achieved after the 50% download point. Be careful to differentiate between KB/s and kbps.

1 KB/s = 8 kbps

Oh now I understand. Cheers mate. Anyway, here's the accurate tests.

50megs - 200KB/s which is 1600kbps.
1gig - 200KB/s which is also 1600kbps.

So, my conclusion is that its optimised then. :)

To do a tracert, click 'Start' and then 'Run'. Type "cmd" into the box and click 'ok'.

A DOS black screen will appear. Type after the C:\>

tracert http://www.yahoo.com

and press enter key

When test is completed, move mouse cusor to the DOS black screen, click right and choose 'select all'.

Move mouse cursor to the Quick Reply box of this forum, click right and 'paste'.

Check with your ISP whether they are doing some maintenance work in their network. Irregular pings are at hops 3,6 and 9 belonging to them.

You are double NAT and that is why your speed is slow. Send a private message to Xperthero of this thread as he had just solved a similar problem setting up his Dlink gaming router with Singnet's 2wire router/modem unit:

https://www.speedguide.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=212193

In fact you both can chat on the phone to get your system up and running.

Compare your tracert with Xperthero's

Yours have a LAN within a LAN, or a router connected to another router. This is called double NAT. Ping times at the router should be less than 1ms.

Most likely your DSL Speedstream modem is a router cum modem unit and its router function has been turned on. To make it a pure modem, you have to connect your comp directly to it and turn on its bridge mode. Just like what Xperthero had to do with his 2wire modem.

Hop 1 does not seem to be right. It should be displaying a LAN address and not a (WAN) IP address. If you comp is connected to the router, the address in hop 1 should be 192.168.x.x format. Seems your router has also be put into bridge mode, which is wrong.

After putting your DSL modem into bridge mode, you have to connect your comp to your router and connect the router to your DSL modem, and rerun setup to the router as though you have just bought it from the store and installing it for the first time. The mode to select during setup of the router would probably be PPPoE LLC unless otherwise specified by Singnet.

When properly set, the router will establish a WAN connection through the modem on the one side, and make a LAN connection to your comp on the other side. After that, you can link in your second comp and port forward through the router for gaming and P2P clients.

Oh man.

Okay, here's what I've done.

Modem

Singnet gave all its customers with 1500 plan a 4100 Speedstream modem and it ripped all the advance tools/options thus, I can't do the bridging by going to its website gateway, 192.168.254.254. So, I found a way to bridged it by manually holding the reset button for 20 secs. I've called Singnet's technical/Speedstream technical services here and they don't have any idea on how to bridge, they just state that as long as its working, there's nothing to worry [CRAP!] :irate:

Wire up

I've wired all accordingly. PC goes to number 1 of the Router's back input. WAN goes to the modem. I've set my Router to PPPoE with my username and password. There were some options. 'Connect on demand and Keep alive'. Didnt understand so didnt adjust it.

So, I don't know what should I do next, I'm willing to make it work though.

You will need to set LAN properties to a static IP address later when you want to do port forwarding.

What is your Brand and model of your router?

Your DSL modem is already operating as a modem from your latest tracert.

What you need to do now is to config your router. Here are links on how to config linksys routers. The first is to do initial set up and the second to do port forwarding:

I've done all of that now, but my tracert is still the same as the ones posted above. Is there anything wrong with that?

EDIT: Does the tracert test show that the router's not working as planned? I'm still not safe from hackers or anything?

When done properly, your primary comp link to the router will have a LAN address 192.168.1.100. Does your comp have this LAN address?

If your comp is not in a LAN with a LAN address assigned, then it is not connected to a router and enjoys no NAT protection from hackers in the internet.

Atm, I've searched every manual and manuals online but I could only find that the nodes have something to do with DHCP.

I don't quite know what to do, I've set everything up almost perfect as what I've read here. I'm not going to give up though and with you guys here especially Troggers! [Thanks a loads], I'm gonna try again, I just need signs/directions.

Please help. Thank you. :thumb:

Perhaps your router supports Hybrid networking as discussed in this link:

http://wireless.about.com/od/wirelessro ... outers.htm

What speed are you getting when tested at Singnet's website? Or you can try testing at this link using their test server in Singapore:

Here is a link to guide you on port forwarding your router. Just select and click on your router Brand and model no. and then click on the program you want to port forward and follow their instructions:

Wow, sure you got the figure right? Your package with Singnet is for 1500 kbps and you tested above it. Singtel must be in a mess without the direction of HY Lee as CEO... :rotfl:

If you are using XP SP2, you will need to download and run this patch to increase your half-opened concurrent connections from 10 to 50:

http://www.lvllord.de/?lang=en&url=downloads

I am using 80 on my 1000 kbps line.
