Please be informed that this type of thread is against this board's policy. The activity you speak of is illegal in the United States, where this board exists. Please do not discuss this type of information here.

Here is the board's policy: http://www.speedguide.net/editorials/uncapping.shtml

Uncapping might be a taboo topic on this board but it's not illegal. Definately a violation of any intelligently written TOS but Illegal? Come on.

Personally I'd like to know if it is possible to hardwire a modem to ignore the cap. I don't think it's possible and as with most other posts on uncapping treat them like Urban myths but it's not like the board is getting 10k posts a day so why not run with it?

Uncapping can be likened to putzing with your cable TV service for extra channels. If they want to push it, it's illegal theft of service. Not likely they'd prosecute, but you'd be banned for life from that provider.

And for those leasing their modems, there's a potential legal issue there too as for opening up the modem or otherwise 're-wiring' it.

Nevertheless, it's against the policy of this board to discuss uncapping, and it will be up to the administrators and moderators how far the discussion continues.

Actually uncapping can't be likened to stealing extra channels because there is no option (yet but it is in the works) to buy more bandwidth.

Not really an issue on leased modems, if you open and screw with it you bought it plain and simple.

True it is and I agree with it BUT I (and I am sure there are others out there) think it's interesting IF (pretty huge if) it can be done and how.

listen, it can't be done. The cap is not controlled by your modem, it is controlled on their end. Cable modems are already pre-built for MegaByte speeds, but u are capped AT THEIR END, NOT YOURS.

So drop it.

It's illegal according to a provider's AUP/TOS, and that's all that counts.

It's not about the discussion of illegal actions, but rather the discussion about whether uncapping is or isn't illegal.
