Whats the Best Cable Modem?

Post by JJ »

Is there any diff? This will be used for an @HOME account; and plan on using either a 3-COM ethernet card or a D-Link. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

I did a search though previous posts and couldn't find any talk on comparisons. I'm sure this must have come up and is old news. What's the scoop.

There is no "best" cable modem. If you're on a DOCSIS network, they all perform the same.

Not really. On Optimum Online a few people did an experiment and changed their motorola surfboard or 3com sharfin for a terayon terajet and speeds went from about 5-6Mbps to 8Mbps.

That doesn't mean the terajet is better, just under certain conditions, it's faster.

Umm.. The Com21 modems suck. Comcast came and took away ours after is lost synch for 3 days. Apparently, Comcast is getting rid of all their Com21's because they have a firmware problem that makes them disconnect alot. Moreover, download throughput would jump all over the place no matter where we ftp'd from. The new RCA has never lost synch and downloads stay pretty constant for the the duration of the download.

Good 3com cards use less cpu usage then dlinks do. I know I have one cumputer that runs a dlink card. the other two use three coms. I have a Toshiba PCX1100 modem DOCSIS and it great get good speed's and can not complain. :)
