Hmmmm lets see here, no a simple answer to this age old question due to the fact that it depends on many things here are a few
the primeary function of the connection, just playing the games, or hosting if you are going to be hosting Cable might not be the best option, your location and provider,
if DSL your distance from the CO plays a major role, the amount of people on your node if cable, over all though cable is cheaper than DSL in most cases, also DSL comes in many flavors with many diffrent prices, but from my own experience I would reccomend DSL for gameing, its a bit more stable, easier to host games depending on the package you purchase. eveluate your needs for the broadband service then choose, also if you can get both services and they dont bind you to a year contract try em both and see for your self. peace

Thanks for the input-here is some more info if it helps.
Dsl distance to co is less than 15000 feet.1.2 down cap,384 up cap. It's $39.95 a month with a $99 setup fee.
The cable is Roadrunner,$39.95 a month.
Everyone I know who has RR loves it.Everyone I know who has DSL loves it,lol.
Is either superior to the other in ping time,or latency?
Thanks....

Hmm well the final choice is yours, but like I said it depends on what you want to do with the Bwidth your distance to CO isnt bad and the DSL package you are able to obtain would be good for serving games. Try dsl! I was on cable last year Comcast @home and had very horrible experience 3 1/2 months worth of extremely high pings etc and very unorofesional tech support. 1 week after it was resolved I moved to a new location. Where I am extremely close to the CO hehe 2 1/2 blocks :D I sucscribed for 384/1.5 but excede it all the time. choose wise grasshopper :D

DSL, especially SDSL, generally yields better pings, however, it ultimately depends on your area/provider. You may want to visit dslreports.com, which is an excellent place to obtain ISP reviews, performance info and a whole lot more.

Generally, cable yields lower latency than the equivalent xDSL connection. (the approx latency over my cable link is ~6ms constant). So it's great for gaming. DSL can also be great for gaming, just choose your provider carefully :)

I beg to differ, as would many. :) Your case is a rarity.

Tell you what, I'd put money on anyone who thinks DSL generally yields better pings before I'd put any money on you. :)

Yeah, it does ultimately depend on your provider/area, but if I was a gamer, I'd be using SDSL. :)

DSL or cable-which is better for gaming?

Post by Sox »

Next week,I will FINALLY be able to get broadband.I can choose between Earthlink DSL,or Roadrunner cable.
My question is,which would be better for gaming(ping times especially)?
Any help,or comments would be appreciated.Right now I'm considering flipping a coin,lmao.
