I'm having weird problems with my cable modem...

Post by Sirkusphreak »

I don't come here that often, but its probably because I don't have that many problems, so i guess that's a good thing.

Well... except for the past few days.

I am using Comcast cable internet with a Motorola surfboard 4100 modem, Lynksis BEFSR41 router (Not that it matters), and my badass computer with windows XP and a built in Nvidia (Nforce... somethin starting with an N) ethernet connection or what have you.

Around friday night, i came back from doing whatever around 2:30am and my internet was out. No biggy, i'll just reset the router via my usual method and it'll be fine again.

Well, it didn't work, so I reset the modem, and that didn't work. For about 5 hours, the internet would not work, and calling comcast didn't help... Then, out of nowhere, it would start up and work fantastically.

I brushed it off as maybe just something stupid and there we go.

Well, it happened again Saturday night, almost around the same exact time. 2:30am-7:30am, give or take 10-20 minutes or so. I called up comcast afterwards and they told me nothing is wrong, but complimented me on my ping times, as they were the lowest the woman has seen all day.

So now i'm thinking there is a problem with the modem.

...Today, i wake up around my usual time (6:00pm) and the internet is out. I'm pretty furious, and around 7:15, i call up comcast again. The lady is of no help, and they keep telling me they aren't doing any maintanence or anything to that effect, so its like, what gives?

7:30 hits, i get off the phone with her, and i check the modem... low and behold, its working again, and according to the speedtest site, my connection is the fastest its been in a long time.

If there is something wrong with the modem or the actual cable, wouldn't my connection either be borked indefinatly and need to get fixed? I mean, what's with this on/off crap?

I checked my modem logs and what happens during this time is that something times out so it looks for new signals, and it always locks on the same signal after a while but times out again after not recieving a response.

Anyone have any idea what's going on? Is my modem possesed? Is comcast lying to me?

Common thing to check first...is if you have any splitters being used...replace them. Very common cause of cable internet dropouts...especially if you're in the northeast US..we've had a lot of thunderstorms ripping through lately..and high humidity.

Yeah, i live in chicago and there have been some weird storms lately. I might have to look into that, but its weird how its happening like clockwork, and it doesn't happen when its storming out.

Could it be a coincidence?

I dunno, I played with customer service (comcast) on an outage. 45 mins mostly waiting to uplug this or that. (they insisted it was my cable router. They would not focus any other way on my problem. It wasn't the router...

They would not hear of it, that I work on computers for a living... Finally I hung up, walked out side to cool off, and Low and behold. Three Comcast trucks in my next door neighbors front yard. All working on neighborhood upgrades. Dang it!!! I want 45 mins of my lifee back.
