So Blisster is training for a marathon...

Post by Blisster »

**UPDATE 9/7**

Hello friends and family!

It's been quite some time since my last update, and a lot has been going on since then.

Over the past few months my training has gone well; I've run longer and farther than I ever have before and I've met a lot of great people along the way. This truly has been an experience I'll not soon forget. On the down side, I have incurred a few injuries/aggravations along the way which have forced me to rethink my goals for this event. I decided that it would be best if I attempted the half marathon (13.1 miles) as opposed to the full 26.2 mile race. While somewhat disappointing, I felt that it has been the right move, allowing me to retain my enthusiasm for my training and the cause, as well as insure that I will still enjoy the race in October.

That being said, the day is finally closing in and I do have a ways to go in my fundraising efforts, and I am now asking for your help. I have received many generous donations thus far, totaling over $1,000. I'm still only half-way to the required fundraising minimum of $2,100 and just one-third of the way to my personal goal of $3,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

If you can find a means to make a donation of any amount to this most charitable cause, those suffering at the hands of Leukemia, Lymphoma and other blood-related cancers would be grateful. Please remember; at my fund-raising minimum over 75% of all funds received go directly to research and relief efforts, anything above and beyond goes 100% to such.

You can make a secure on-line donation directly from my fundraising page here http://www.active.com/donate/tntgsf/tntgsfJChilds , or you can send me a check made out to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and either get it to me in person or send it to my mailing address below.

Your charitable contributions are much needed AND much appreciated!

To all my SG friends/family-

It’s been a while since some of you have heard from me for various reasons, and I hope this finds you and yours well. As some of you may know, 2005 proved to be quite a trying year for me on many fronts. I found myself sinking into a funk which I just couldn’t shake, and realized that I needed some perspective.

I found something to challenge me physically and emotionally. I have decided to run The Leukemia and Lymphoma Societies ‘Team in Training’ fundraising marathon. I have met several of the honoree participants (Team and Training members that are suffering or undergoing treatment for one of the related blood-cancers)--it was quite a moving experience. Up until that day I’d felt that I was going through a difficult time; but after meeting these incredible people I knew better. I knew that for them every day was a fight just to live, that at any minute everything that was precious to them and their loved ones could be taken away. It changed my perspective on life and I knew that I needed to do this, so I signed up then and there.
So there it is; I am training to run a marathon in San Francisco on October 22nd, 2006!

This is a fundraising event, and the commitment I’ve made is to contribute $3000 to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in support of the amazing work that they do. For the first $2500, 75% of the funds I raise go directly to Leukemia and blood-cancer related research right here in the Bay Area, at Stanford, UCSF and Cal Berkeley, the other 25% covers administrative costs as well as the professional training that I am receiving (this is a much higher ratio than many other fundraising events of this type, which are usually closer to a 40-60 split). Every single dollar that I raise above and beyond that goes entirely 100% to research and relief.
If is possible for you to include the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in your charitable giving this year, I would greatly appreciate your support. Any amount really can and does make a difference. All donations are tax deductible. My deadline is October 6th, 2006, so if now is not a good time, please keep this in mind in future months.

You can make a donation directly from my fundraising page via a Verisgn Secure donation form: http://www.active.com/donate/tntgsf/tntgsfJChilds.

Many companies offer a donation-matching program where they may double or triple the amount that you have donated. If this is something that you can help with, I encourage you to speak with your HR department as well. This can greatly increase the amount of money raised.

I am keeping track of my progress both on my fundraising page, as well as on my personal blog, where I will note how far I’ve reached, where my fundraising is at, as well as pictures and stories about the honorees that continue to touch my life. http://seajackrun.livejournal.com/

On behalf of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, my honorees and all that suffer at the hands of cancer, I thank you so much for any kindness and generosity that you can offer!!! If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. And if you can’t donate at this time, please keep me in your thoughts.

Thanks,
Jack

P.S. Please pass this along to any and all you know that might be willing to help, together we can all make a difference!

heh, yep in one day!

Right now I am logging about 20-25 miles per week and am up to 7 miles in one stretch, longer than I have ever run in my life. By race day I will have logged well over 500 miles in training.
Crazy. I've already lost close to 20 pounds!! I now have to eat more and more, as I am burning 1000 - 1500 calories just during my runs.

Hey Blisster if you are already at 20-25 per week you are ahead of schedule for a race in October. Also 500 miles is more than enough training for a successful marathon, you should do just fine. The best advice I can give is stick to your schedule and don't bump up your distance too quickly even if you feel like you can, this is a common cause of injury. Good luck and thanks for running for a great cause!

Damn Jack, that's awesome! I work out only 2-3 days a week and usually just stick with any sort of cardiovascular activities and such. I'll run about 2 miles and that's about it, LOL. 26.2 miles..... Good luck on this journey. I wish you nothing but the best. I'll throw you a donation later on in the week. :thumb:

Damn Jack that's very admirable of you to participate! If I lived in SF I would sign up just to be your water boy during that run. :) P.S. I don't do mouth to mouth. j/k

I will try to take a lesson from your determination and effort!!! I run about two miles a day...(medium jog?) five days a week, (when I'm a good girl).

Thanks for the inspiration. I'll check it out.

Blisster,

You brought back memories of when i ran my first marathon, it was 1986 in Berlin.

A group of us was at the Irish Pub there they made me a bet that i could not finish it at all.

Back then i was young, dumb and full of ... well i will say stupidity i took them up on there bet and ran it after about 2 hours sleep.

I finished it in 3:01:58 they were like this  everybody told me i almost qualified for the Boston Marathon. I laughed at them i told them i did it for me to prove i could do it.

Was i hurting after that would be an understatement, it finihsed exactlly where the Irish Pub was at. I was cramping so bad they had lovely ladies giving massages. I got one to relieve the pain and walked down into the Irish Pub to start drinking again.

My advice to you; eat the whole week before carbs, bannanas and hydrate and no beer like i did it was stupid.

Good luck and i hope you the best, once you finish it the euphoria will be so great. Honesty the best high you will ever have.

It sounds like you did qualify with time to spare unless they switched 18-34 times from 3:00 to 3:10 since you ran. Nonetheless 3:01 is an incredible time for any marathon, let alone your 1st so congratulations. I couldn't finish a half in 1:31 if my life depended on it :) .

I remember when i was 10 years old me and my Dad did our own marathon.
He was running 58km and i was riding bicycle next to him.We did it in 10 or 15 hours i really dont remember it was so long time ago.He was ok but omg my balls were hurting from the seat, sometimes i had to run with him because it hurted so much.It wasnt about speed but about if we can do it + it was in summer + 35-45 degree celsia on the sun.I never did it again and never will, not on the bike for sure :D
