Question for DSL users

Post by Boomy »

How does DSL work as far as setting up your browser? I have cable, my father just got DSL. His is not working. He says that the phone company can see his modem but they said they cant see any signal when he trys to surf around. Sounds like he got the network card installed correctly.
I basically went through some troubleshooting with him on the phone and got stuck when he said the modem is set up to dial a #. And that his browser is set to use a dialup connection instead of a LAN like me.
So how do you connect? I thought it was an "always on" deal.
How does the setup differ from cable?

Thanks for any help

If he's using IE, have him go into tools>internet options>connections. Make sure he has 'never dial a connection' checked. Then, have him click on 'LAN settings', and check 'auto detect settings'.

Hope this helps.
What I want is what I've not got, but what I need is all around me.

Boomy, he probably has a PPPoE connection, which requires logging in before use. If this is the case, a PPPoE implementation such as RASPPPoE or WinPoET must be used. Who is the provider?

Hmm, provider. I think is BellSouth (are they verizon now?).
I think your right tho glc1. Unfortunately I dont know anything about that. What added to the problem, according to the phone company, is that my father has WIN95 and win95 doesnt have a certain component. I guess those progs you mentioned. My father went to microsofts site and supposedly got what he needed but still cant get anywhere. But it seems he IS able to login. He says he gets and icon in the systray that says he is connected at 512K down 256K up.
Is the browser just configured wrong or does it sound like something else?

just to make sure he has everything have him get the "Windows socket 2 for win95 http://www.speedguide.net/Cable_modems/cable_patches.shtml
then have him do the FAQ from DSLReports http://www.dslreports.com/faq/faq#156
Also have him get you the name of the program that is connecting him to the web. He may have something that after he put in the socks 2 update that he may have to reinstall the connection software because it didn't bind to the new winsock..
Hope this helped

Have him set it up as cgram23 described. If he still is having problems, he may want to try RASPPPoE.

Just came back from Florida and used Bellsouth DSL. It is PPPoE. I added a new dial up connection, told it to use the DSL modem and entered the phone number to the dial up Bellsouth account. Not that it dialed it, but it demanded a number.(Dial up account access given as backup if DSL was down). Everything worked fine from there on. Connected @ 1.7M .BTW, I have 2 Alcatel DSL Speed Touch USB Modems. One slightly used, 1 Brand new in box never opened. Anyone interested? For Bellsouth DSL.
