Broadband Problem

Post by Borgie »

Greetings to everyone. I'm having some broadband problems with my new rig. This is what I have:
Asus A8N-SLI mobo
FX-57 CPU
2 Gigs Crucial Ballistix ram
XFX 7800 GTX video card

The BIOS and chipset drivers are up tp date. I'm running XP Media Center 2005 and am using the onboard network adapter. I'm not running any anti-virus or anti-spyware programs. The Windows firewall is disabled.

My problem is slow connection speeds. If I run a test through http://www.netbroadcasting.tv/myspeed/index.html, I get 700 down and 300 up. On my other two computers, I get 3000 down and 700 up. I have changed ethernet cables and also connected directly to my ISP, with no change. When playing on various Quake 4 servers, my ping jumps all over the place; from 30 all the way to 999. My other computers ping from 17 to 30 on the same servers. I tried installing a network card and got the same results. I've tweaked all the network settings I know of and have used various network optimizer programs. I also played around with the network adapter properties, all with the same results. At first I thought I might have a bad mobo, so I switched to an Abit KN8-SLI mobo using the same CPU and ram. Even with the new mobo, I got the same results.

Does anyone know if it's possible for for a CPU to cause broadband problems? Or could it be a problem with the Nvidia network controller and/or drivers?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

My first guess would be some sort of EMI interference... Either from fluorescent lights, AC, even routers/cable modems can cause interference sometimes, check out this story: http://www.speedguide.net/read_articles.php?id=1885

CPU/MoBo generally can't cause such problems, unless they're constantly under 100% load... Some of the onboard NICs are not really good, and it is possible to cause problems, however I'd look into interference first.

I hope this helps some

Wow, I tried something and it worked! I moved the computer to another room and ran a long cable to the router. It worked fine in a different room. Moved it back to the original place, same cable and everything, and the problem came back. The cable modem and router are seperated, so I know it's not that. I do have a twelve inch subwoofer about 3 feet from the computer. I'll try moving things around later. Thanks for the heads up Philip!

For anyone interested, here is an update on my problem. My final test was to set the computer in its original place and remove everything from around it and over it. No electrical devices were near it. I ran an extension cord to the computer from another room and moved the monitor, mouse, keyboard, and all speakers as far away as I could get them. With the computer in the original place, the problem still existed. As soon as I move it out from under the desk, or just moved it to the side by a foot, it works fine. I am completely stumped as to why this is happenning. To fix the problem, I just moved the computer to the other side of the desk. Everything is fine now. If anyone has any theories as to what is going on, I would sure love to hear them. Maybe there is a small rip in the space/time continuum at that particular spot beneath my desk. LOL

If the computor desk is against a wall, perhaps there is something on the other side. If its an outside wall perhaps its a powerline or an ac unit?? Just thoughts... :wth:

It is an outside wall, but there is nothing on the outside of it. The AC unit is about 30 feet away.

maybe it is the third dimension leaching your internet speed..

glad you sorted out the main problem though
