Don't worry too much about power if you're not doing anything intensive. I'm running the eval copy of 2003 on a celeron 300A clocked to 450, with 448megs of ram I scraped together. I'm extremely impressed with how well it runs.Izzo wrote: Gonna throw Server 2003 on it and fiddle with that ...
Of course installing it took forever and a day, but it's just for playing, so who cares.

What you want to be careful on ...is certified drivers...proper support for the OS. Looking on their website...I don't see drivers that have "2003" on them.
May or may not work using 2K/XP drivers......you just don't want to end up with a Device Manager riddled with "?" marks for hardware. Then the server acts wonky on ya.
I like nForce chipset...I've never installed a server OS to one. Might consider looking an an older rock solid chipset, many inexpesive yet still good branded boards out there on Intel chipsets like the 865.

It's something to be cautious of with servers. Having it appear to install correctly doesn't necessarily mean it'll run problem free 24/7. I realize it's just a home PC to dork around on for him, but I've seen "homegrown" servers in business setups. And they'll often be "flakey".
It's not so much the random lockup, or blue screen...but those oddball problems they'll have. Various services need restarting, some service not running quite right, something that normally works on proper servers...giving you grief on this particular server.
A server operating system can be more demanding than a desktop OS..even a gaming computer. Once you promote a server to DC...and run a network from it, you're dependent on a lot of little services doing their job.
It could run great for him, I hope it does. It's just something to be aware of. I hate to see someone have problems with it...and blame "Windows"..when it's not Windows that's the root of the issue.
