LONDON (AFP) - A 13-year-old British girl who did not realise she was pregnant has given birth to a baby weighing three kilos (six-and-a-half pounds) she has named Sophie.

Charlotte Maddox said she remembered feeling "a bit podgy" but did not know she was pregnant until she went into labour. Initially, she put her contractions down to a stomach infection.

"I was screaming in pain and put it down to eating too much. I was screaming in pain and shouted, 'I've got to push something, it's coming!'" she told Britain's Daily Mirror.

"That was the first time I realised I was pregnant and about to become a mum. Suddenly the pain disappeared and I was in total shock.

"The next thing I knew was hearing Sophie scream for the first time. I was so relieved she was safe. Then it suddenly hit me that I was a mum.

"My whole life had changed in three hours. I went from feeling a bit poorly and worrying about my homework to holding a newborn baby in my arms and worrying about a new life."

The teenager, from Devon, southwest England, said she had lost her virginity on the day of her 13th birthday.

She was living with a foster family at the time, although she returned to live with her parents in September.

She said she had no desire to see the 15-year-old father of her baby daughter.

"I don't want him looking after her. He wasn't the nicest boy in the world, and I think we will be better off without him," she said.

WTF? How the hell do you NOT know that you're preggo? And if you don't know, how the hell don't the people that are taking care of you know? Something doesn't sound right with this story.....you can only hide a pregnancy for so long before it becomes obvious that you're preggo.

I read it twice and cant follow how someone didn't know, a six pounder on a 13 year old shouldn't be that hard to spot.

In addition to your questions, how can she deny the father the right to see his kid, at least?

Unless she already weighs like 150 pounds....Again, this doesn't surprise me at all...

i didnt mean it meanly, like she musta been fat and uneducated or something. Just saying in order to hide a baby, and not know it yourself that your pregnant you would probably have to be overweight. an 110 lb girl is going to notice if just her belly is getting larger moreso then someone who is already heavy.

Its happened before and in adult women who didn't know. Not everyones stomach blows up when they become preggo.

As far as her not knowing, I would say it's possible that she had never had a regular period at her age, but I do wonder what she thought all that moving around in her stomach was??

Maybe she thought the guys penis broke off inside of her and was still active, you know, like a worm after you cut it in half. She sounds pretty naive enough to me, why not?

I know you weren't being mean. She must have not had any parential guidance or anyone really looking after her. Most kids visit the docors office at least once a year. I now mine does.
