Ad-hoc setup

How do i set up both my computers to communicate directly via a wireless connection with security??

Thats an Ad-Hoc setup is it not?

I think im missing something when i tried it last.. same channel, same network name.. but how do i make sure they both communicate and i can share files to each other?

Both are running XP Pro, what services are needing to be running as well to do this..

Microsoft Networking
File and Printer Sharing
TCP/IP

Right Click on the Hard Drive letter or Folder you want to share and left click on Sharing and security and enable it.

Likewise with any printer you want to share on the network

Once you have done that you should be able to see the other computer in My Network Places, you can then double click the Machine and when you see the shared resource you want you can right click and left click on MAP (If its a drive) or Connect (If its a printer) and voila...next time you reboot if both computers are on it will automatically be reconnected and will appear in your MY Computer as a drive or in your Printers folder as a printer.

You can use WPA for your routers security.

Well most of that holds true.. but im looking to do it without going through a router or AP.. just a way to make both talk to each other to transfer files.. Otherwise I'll be waiting till my drive enclosure arrives

my problem is that system B seems to drop connection after a bit.. its after about an hour or 2 that it happens...

Im about to go and get a Cross-over cable from a local store and jsut do it wired..

As far as services go, in Services.msc, From what i've noticed I need Server, Computer browser, and Workstation, enabled as well as the other networking services.

Really wish i had the tool needed to make my own cables. I'd make a crossover cable and be done with it....

You haven't provided much technical detail as to what you have tried and what results/errors you have encountered. The only answer would be a tutorial okn how to config adhoc wifi.

If you have basic connection for two hours, then there is nothing to look at the computer setting.

Either you have external noise that interrupt the communication, or and it is the usual Ad—Hoc behavior, Ad-Hoc connection are Quirky for long run use.

Sorry I didn't know what i needed to provide.. Im not too used to asking for alot of networking help lol.. but then again.. how am i gonna learn unless I ask huh?

What details do you need?
Cards - In system A - Gigabyte 802.11G (GN-WP01GS ) Best wireless card i've ever dealt with (but the shop i got it in only had one and didn't have anymore when i got back.. =/ )
In System B - Belkin 802.11G - (F5D7000) Loves to randomly disconnect from network, but still gets the job done.

Something just dawned upon me as well.. I've been using the wifi cards programs that they came with, and I've not fully experimented with them. So im not 100% sure I can do an Ad-Hoc setup via the built-in software, or if i can if i can do it properly.

here is another thing to toss out there.. I have a Gigabyte Network card on the main systen (System A) and its software can make the card act like an AP. When i did this in the Other system sees it and can connect to it, but it errors out when it doesn't get an IP address. And either computer cannot see each other still.. (even with every networking related service on, and the Windows Firewall off..) If I was to continue to attempted to connect in this way would i ened to set up some sort of DHCP mini-server on my computer to assign proper IP addresses or is there something in windows Im missing? (recalling something about a setup like that in the network setup wizard)

If you need any more details, lemme know. I'm flying blind but hey.. im still flying..

YOu mentioend that the two do connect - how do you verify this? Can you ping the other machine by address? Can you ping by name?

You want to allow file stransfer and other services across the link - are you using static addressing? Which services/protocols are bound to each adapter?

Don't know those cards, but different vendors use different chipsets which may cause stability (if not compatibility) issues. Does your documentation mention which chips are used?

if you mean when i was using the SoftAP mode of the gigabyte card, I didn't verify much unfortunatly I was a little strapped for time and didn't double check myself

As for the static addressing, Im not quite sure how to do that, something I've been meaning to learn. As for the Protos and Services assigned to each.. I need to double check all that.. im at work now so i cannot look at it all now but i'll double check everything and more info when i get home tonight...

YOu mentioend that the two do connect - how do you verify this? Can you ping the other machine by address? Can you ping by name?

I didn't just make up questions - I asked each one for a reason.
