Best Intel 478 CPU for Asus P4P800 ?

Post by westy »

I know I should be upgrading to a PCI-express mobo and all but just don't have the time to do all the homework. That said, what would be the best Intel CPU to match up with my Asus P4P800 motherboard ?

I thought I could scab one on Ebay reasonably priced or something.

Thoughts and/or comments welcome !!!

Well if its really worth $250 get a 3.2 prescott with 1MB cache and OC then, I really dont think its worth it though.

Not for $ 250 I guess. I wish I would have waited a week or two before buying the 6800 GS OC, now that I see I can pick up an AGP 7800 for $ 100 more.

Just had the itch ya know ?

Ya know theres nothing wrong with what ya got, I had a 2.6@3.2 and a 6800GT, was happy with that for performance and gaming, only got a new system because that all crapped out on me.

I think thats a good system, with Intels Conroe chips and AMD's 65nm tech coming out and motherboards/video cards not taking advantage of dual 16x PCIe lines, its a good time to put away for a system down the road.

Can ya push it any higher? When I had that same mobo...my 2.8 ran at 3.38.

But I agree...I'd not spend money on another CPU for that mobo...if you come across a used 3.0 or 3.2 or something dirt cheap...worth a shot.

I think I'll try cranking up my 2.8 a little this weekend and see what happens.

If you do upgrade to a newer 478, I would jump to a prescott, 1MB cache vs 512k like on yours. They run hotter but your alpha can take it.

You're at 220mhz fsb? Probably gonna need to relaxe your memory timings a bit to go much higher.

there isn't much homework involved in making the switch to a better platform, i'd not waste my money on socket 478, i'd put it toward a new platform

Yep, I have the PIV 3.0 Northwood on the P4P800 board. It is still very nice for me. I wouldn't buy a new processor either Westy. I think what you have is just fine unless you want to do a complete upgrade.
Just my 2 cents.

I think 220 was the top on setting my FSB befroe I ran into trouble with it booting. I would probably have to do some tweaking with my memory and I don't know what the trade of is, a faster CPU or slower memory settings. Right now my memory is running at 2-4-4 T according to CTIAW.

might wanna try

2.5 3 3 8 or

2.5 4 4 8, then OC, its gonna be trial and error though, so if you don't wanna deal with lock up then I'd say leave it.

Im also looking on an upgrade option.
p4ee 3.2.. asus mobo. I do lots of video encoding. Should I just oc my cpu and get some good ram, I have a nice antec psu. or move up to socket 775.
Main: AMD Ryzen R7 3700X, Asus Crosshair Hero VI, Nvidia 2070 Super, 16GB 3200MHz Ram, NVMe, EVGA SuperNOVA 750 P2 PLATINUM, Lian Li PC-V2120

That 2.8C will go to 3.4+ with decent cooling. I had my 3.0C at 3.5 with only it's stock Intel heatsink. Your board will hit it's FSB limit before you reach chip cooling problems (using a high end air cooler).

Because of the FSB/14x multi ratio, the 2.8 is actually better for OCing if your board can take a higher bus speed. The reason being that you can get higher bus speeds with lower CPU clocks, and that's where most of the performance is in these modern rigs.

Ex:
3.2C (16x multi) would have to run at 4.0Ghz to result in a 1Ghz FSB and that's a major cooling problem
-vs-
2.8C (14x multi) can run at 3.5Ghz on a 1Ghz FSB which makes it alot easier to cool the chip.

Of course this is assuming your motherboard and RAM can take a high FSB, I do not have any OCing experience with Asus' Intel boards but my Abit ran a 1Ghz FSB fine.

Good luck! :)

I think you'll be happier with a higher 6xx series 775 chip than a 3.2EE on the 478 socket, particularly for the price. The instruction sets on the newer cores should help your encoding a bit.

Either way, you're looking at a huge jump from your current setups (sig), those revision A P4s were garbage.

what looking to do with system?

i still have my P4P800, 6800GT, and 2 GB ram, and to be honest i can play antyhing with most max details just fine

at this point I dont see any games that I need to upgade..I can sitll play EQ2 at 1600x1200 with most details on which is pretty incredible if you know that game.

I am getting a laptop to replace my older one..and looking at the benchmarks I seen looks like it going to be faster then my desktop..which is kind of funny..never had a laptop faster then my desktop before.
