Cheap Cable Wiring

Post by alien8ed »

Hello. Recently I tried to subscribe to RoadRunner. I was unable to connect with their modem. The serviceman felt it was because my apartment building is wired with rg59 and that possibly G6 will work. It would be very expensive to rewire. Are there any modems which have worked using this cheaper cable wire? Appreciated in advance.

Who cares what it cost, they are your provider, have them provide, it's on them not you, you order, they provide :)

Not really, but it looks like they could run RG6 from the street or pole directly to your cable modem thus bypassing the old wiring. If not, then they are denying service to certain people which seems like discrimination. No?

I agree with both of you. The Cable company is willing to install the better necessary cable, but will only do it by drilling directly into the apartment (which is forbidden by the landlord). The original wiring goes up the side - into a crawl space - and down the other side of the buiding. Should they be required to replace the old wire in its original place?

This is a touchy subject among Landlords and the cable company. Landlords own the rights to the cable system in their building 30 days after it is put in, though I am not sure how your cable company works. Most landlords in our neighborhood love it when we come over to rewire. They pay no cost as long as they keep our service. We want to keep our customers happy, as do they. Get on your landlord and make him let the cable company rewire the right way. Let him know that the service is usually free.

Most likely you don't need new cable. Tell them to take off all the damned 4-way splitters on your line! The cable should run off a 2-way splitter to the room. Then you can split the other line as many times as you want to your other TV's, etc.

Talk with your LandLord , G6 is the wire that rr usally uses. It for there new digital tv service. They use one step up for the Internet service. I just had mine all redone by them. I have a line for the tvs. Plus I speperate line for my Internet service. beings your in a apartment services, They may do different. But either way. It does not cost. :) Plus insread of a standerd splitter. They put a tap in the hous for my tv's . Toboost the signale. Plus a filter box on the outside. I use to work for them so I was able to talk the tec into this. Just try talking to your landlord it doesn't cost to have your lines upgraded.

OK Here it goes. Yes it is beter to use rg-6
rather than rg-59. That having been said...
lets get the rest of the story. What were the levels in your apartment. (Did they check?? ) Is there a spliter out side the building, in the crawl, atic. Did they take the modem to the TAP to see if it came up off a hot drop. Please awnser these if you can and we'll take it from there.

Second: Some apartments allow cable to be rewired some dont. Find out what your landlord wants. If the cable company can not do it the way he wants it done then he needs to have the wire replaced by a contractor. Make sure that the cable company proves the wire is bad. The should FDR and sweep the line from end to end. Let us know what happens.

Andrewe77 & Speed.God are both heading in the right direction. The other folks can't make a blanket statement about what costs and what's free unless they work in your system. I would like to also ask if the tech bothered to pull your wall plate and change the crappy ingress sucking connector. 59 will do a fairly commendable job if it's set up right. There are several places where a lazy tech (I'm not judging, but I see it every day) can blow off changing fittings and jumpers. If the tech only spent a couple minutes out there, then he didn't do his job.

I just went through the same problem. It is definately the RJ59 cable and you need RG56 for RR to work. I have a main cable line comming in from my basement that is RJ56 and the electrician that did my house used cheap RJ59 cable. When I connected the modem directly to the 56 it worked. I had them run a line directly from the Rj56 line in the basement to my room upstairs and it now works perfectly. Stop wasting your time, I gaurantee you it is the only thing u can do. I had 1 month of trouble until it was solved

I think what is at issue here is between the Cable company and the landlord.
If you signed a contract with your apartment landlord that has cable written in it and the cable company says it's bad. you have the right to withhold a portion of you payment till the Landlord makes it right. (Beware of this route because it becomes a bad issue)
I think your landlord will allow replacemnet and The cable company don't care who ownes it once you are on their contract.
But I agree there are to many other issues to deal with than just the cable itself.
Tell your cablecompany to fight it out with the Landlord. And sit back and watch! :)

I agree if buggyman. Maybe this way you will get it fixed. Don't spend money on it yourself. The cable upgrade is free. Just bring it up with the lanlord. ;)

I install in NJ and when we encounter 59 we are required to replace it. But like said before 59 is capable of carrying the signal.
So that is the question. What are the levels at the modem and if low, how can they be corrected?
Even if the landlord does not allow running 56 from the ped or pole, it is the cable companys obligation to fix or pay to fix the problem.
