How to hook up 3 computers on to 1 IP???

Post by Mercurick »

I'm on Road Runner in upstate NY and have three computers in my home and want to hook them all up to one IP address. I have a hub with an uplink and there all hooked up and ready to go but how do I get them all to recognize one IP address and not have the data go to the wrong computer?? When I only had 2 computers in my house I popped for the second IP from road runner for and extra $10 bones a month but now that I have 3 in my house I want to drop the extra IP and hook them all up to 1.
Road Runner tells me it's not possible to do but I know they just want my extra $20 a month and I'm not going to give it to them cause I know IT IS possible to do this.
Can someone help me?
Thanks
Kevin~

You need to convert an existing computer into a "server" or purchase a router.

That's a step in the converting a PC into a "server" method. A proxy alternative is ICS (built-in to Win2k, ME, 98se), or other NAT software.

If I wanted to share a connection from a computer using windows ME to a computer using Win95. Do I have to get any software for the Win95 computer like a proxy client?

No, only the server needs the software. WinME has ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) built-in, so if you use the WinME machine as the "server", no third party software is needed.

they HAVE answered your qeustion

1.) Set up one computer to be an Internet Connection Server Win98SE/ME and Win2k come with one that's built in called ICS. Or you can purchase some NAT software like WinGate or something.

2.) Get a Router, the Linksys Etherfast Cable/xDSL router is a good option, i'm running it and it works great for me, got 4 computers sharing one net connection right now.

Those are basically your two options...

If you want to do ICS ONLY the server has to have the ICS built in, therefore the server can be running Win98SE or WinME or Win2k

The clients just have to setup with DHCP, on the ICS computer when you set it up it will make a diskette you just pop it in on the clients computers and run the program and it takes you through the wizard to set it up on the client machines, real easy like

ICS, if your using Win2k, ME, 98se, or other NAT/proxy software, such as Sygate, Winroute, AnalagX, etc.

If you got Win98SE/Me or Win2k ICS is built in, therefore it's free....

you wouldn't have to purchase a software like those other third partys...

it's the best and Easiest option if you are new to networking and internet sharing and the like....

ICS = Internet Connection Sharing (built-in to Win2k, ME, 98se)
You can use ICS in place of third party proxy/NAT software when using a "server" to share an internet connection.

ICS is only installed on the server. The clients need no software and need to be set to use DHCP. The server's LAN NIC need an IP and subnet of 192.168.0.1 and 255.255.255.0, respectively.

Enable ICS on the server machine

and then just Run through the Wizard setup, it will take you through ALL of it real easy through the wizard...

just follow and do what it says onscreen

glc1 not completly certain, it's been a while since i setup ICS, but I *think* it uses the Internal IP that windows auto assings if it can't find a DHCP server. that special 169.xxx.xxx.xxx number i think

of course you can change it to any series you want such as the 10. or 198. series

Ok I've been reading the help file in Win Me on all this and it says I need to hook up the cable coming from my cable modem to the network card on the computer running ICS and then a cable from that network card to the hub and then the other two computers hooked into the hub. All this so the other two computers can recgonize the host computer running ICS.

One problem though....

All the network cards in all 3 of my computers only have one outlet. Only room for ONE RJ45 cable to connect to them.

So how am I supose to run the cable from the cable moden to the network card on my host computer and then another cable from there to the hub?
Is there some sort of spliter I can get?

right now I have the cable from the cable modem running to the hub and the three computers running to the hub as well.

Is there anyway to get them all online using 1 IP this way?

Thanks

When I used ICS on my Win2k server w/ATT@Home, I had to setup my clients dynamically, otherwise, I wouldn't be able to get online. The assigned IPs were always 192.x.x.x

Mercurick, the server needs two NICs.

Only if you purchase more IPs.

Brent, I believe that 169.x.x.x IP is like an error message.

glc1 yeah, i'll have to look at that again, maybe i'll setup an ics server again to see what it sets it up as, it's been a long while since i've done it so i can't really remember What ip scope it uses....

and Mercurick you have to put 2 network cards in the server, preferably of a differnet brand/model so you can tell them apart in the network properties so you know which one is connected to what ethernet cable...

Ok since you are using WinME it's REALLY easy

here is a Guide that will tell you how to do it with WinME, follow it and you will have no problems

Ok Ok I think I got it..
I need two network cards in MY computer. The host computer.

What a pain in my ass! :)

ONE last question here.
After I get this set up and and drop my seconf IP so I only have to pay for one will there be anyway that Road Runner can tell that I have three computers hooked up to the net? I'm sure they wouldn't like that and would want to charge me for 2 additional IP's ya know...
And ok make it TWO more question.
Is there anyway I can change my IP number?
Just flat out change it.
I play Unreal Tournamet a lot and get banned from servers sometimes cause im so damn good they think I cheat witch I dont! :) hehee
I want back on the server but they banned my IP address.
How would I connect to a server that has banned me and make it seem as if I had a diffrent IP?

Thanks for all your help people!!

No b/c the server's modem NIC is assigned the only WAN IP. The rest of the NICs are assigned internal IPs.

True, however, sharing is not illegal even though they don't support it.

Only upon request. However, it may randomly change if/when RR decides to rotate IPs.

Answer to #1 there is no way they can tell unless you tell them

#2 no you can't change your IP from your ISP, they can, if you give em a good enough reason i guess, heh

Personally, I like the Router option. The Linksys BEFSR41 only costs about $149 at Best Buy. I understand the pros and cons. But for anyone who is not familiar with setting up and configuring a "server", it is so much simpler that the cost is justified IMHO.

Of course, I say this even though I now want to set up a Linux box to act as my Gateway/Firewall/Router. But I'm a "glutton for punishment" and am trying to learn "networking". :p

http://www.avirt.com download there networking book or get a router before you drive yourself nuts with ICS...
But if you got it working good... Just remember if you tweak one you have to tweak all of them....
One last thing if you get a router then I really like the support and routers from Ugate

You know I hear a lot of complaining about ICS but I have used it sucessfully with three different OSs at the same time.

It isn't any harder than setting up your router, and way easier than setting up a linux router.

You don't use a splitter to connect the server to the cable modem and the lan, you use two NICs in the same computer. Each NIC connects to one other device.
