HELP THE NEWBIE!!!

Post by athlonrulz »

I have a cable modem and (like any people with 2 comptuers) I want to share the internet connection to another computer. However, I do not wish to use more than one IP assigned from my cable company because, well, the service is not available. How could I connect both computers to the same internet connection? I also want to make these two computers able to share other resources like printers etc. I do not want to have the other computer totally dependant on the computer with the cable modem connection because that computer will not always be switched on all day long. I've heard a ranged of solutions from routers to switches, but I want to make it cheaply. I thought of hub, but a newbie like me would not understand anything regarding this IP thing. If I use only hub, will I still be able to get only one IP from the ISP? Is there any other economical solutions out there?

The most economical solution would probably get another NIC, install it in the computer that will be pulling the IP address from the provider, and assign a non-routable IP address to the secondary computer. You won't need a hub for this.

It can be easily done without a hub or router.

The machine connected to the internet will have to have two network cards. One for the cable modem and the other for the local network. Your second machine will need just one card.

If you are using Windows 98SE or ME, you can use the internet connection sharing feature that comes with these versions of windows. If you are using Windows 98 first edition or 95 you will need a program such as Winproxy,Sygate, or a similiar type program for the internet sharing.

Since you are not going to use a hub, you will need to get a "crossover" cable to connect the two machines together. I purchased mine at Office Depot for about eight bucks.

The NIC`s will have to have their own seperate IP addresses. You can give them 10.0.0.1 (main machine) and 10.0.0.2 on the second one.

In order for you to use the full networking features of this setup, both machines will have to be on.

Hope this gets you started.

Good luck.

Thanks for the input. If I want my entire computer platfrom to share one IP and I want every computer to get connected without regards of switching which computer on, does this mean router is my only choice?

If you use more than two computers I believe you will have to get a hub/router.

Since I only have two machines I do not use one.

Hopefully someone else will verify for us.
