Help Please Having Ram Issues

Post by Genuinely »

ok last night i installed another stick of ram on my computer...since i only had a 256ddr ram only..so i added another 256ddrbut it was a different brand...when i booted back up my computer..it read both sticks...and everything works well until its suppose to load the windows log in screen ....thats when my monitor turns black and nothing posts...ive tried...switching around both sticks of ram to different slots since i have 3 slots...but still no go...so i restarted and opened up my bios...and it said there is 512mb ram installed...so it reads it there and when i first turn on my computer...yet when it comes time to load the windows xp screen my monitor goes black...do you think its the chipsets...also...itll run if only one of the sticks is in...so i know they both work..im just not sure y my computer reads both sticks yet doesnt post at the windows log in screen...but it posts every screen b4...

1: Kingston KVR266X72RC25/256
2:V-Data VGDDR32X64PC2700 unbuffed

now idk if my kingston is unbuffed or not..but im thinking it is the chipsets on them...im not too sure though...if someone can please help me i would very much appreciate it...thanks much for your time and concern :)

Have you tried just Booting with the Vdata stick in by itself? (The PC2700) if it still gives you a problem its probably bad. If it works with no problems then its your old memory either being bad or not being able to mix with the new RAM.

Try running memtest86+ (The Bootable ISO CD) and test each stick alone. let the testing run at least 1 full time or more. If you want to be thorough then enable the extended tests

yes...i did run the vdata by itself...it does work...and so does my old ram..it just doesnt work when both are in at the same time..it reads they r both there in the bios and boot up screen..but when it comes to login it goes to a black screen and stays that way...and i kno its not on the log in screen cuz i can still press my button to turn on my computer and it shuts off right away...so i was thinking what if i went to a site and downloaded a program to flash my bios... ? u think that might work ...anyways thanks for the help : )

You are better off just buying a matching speed, new stick of the faster ram while its still cheap.

What mobo, i had a mobo with the turbo setting, but there is a certain keyboard combination to let you change the secret setting. The turbo button turns all the clock speeds to a higher setting.

I think to get it to show it was ctrl plus some "F" function on the keyboard, not sure though Good luck

Every once in a while you run into combinations of brands that simply don't get along. Ideally you want identicle brands across the board, but usually you can get away with mixing brands. But every now and then, a you'll come across a mix that won't work together. Just because the BIOS sees the RAM properly doesn't mean much at all, the important thing is the OS can't complete a bootup.

These days, it's important to get RAM that's certified and approved to work in your exact motherboard. Most RAM sites, such as http://www.crucial.com, have memory selection utilities to allow you to select your brand/make/model of hardware, and it produces a list of RAM that's specifically tested, approved, and guaranteed to work in your system. Gone are the days of grabbing "any old stick of RAM that appears to be the right speed/type", and sticking it in a system and hoping for it to work. Sure 1/2 or 3/4 of the time it may appear to work fine, but what about that occasional illegal operating, application hang, or illegal operation, or total lockup or blue screen? Once a week, month, etc. You'll never know what caused it.

This....V-Data brand, never heard of it.
