Opinions on this upgrade ?

Post by Mytflyguy »

Ok , Going from my Current system in my Signature , I plan to keep my Raptor and one of my WD 80 gig drives plus my Sound card ... Pretty much the rest will go to my daughter for her system and I will purchase the following ....

Keep in mind this is primarily a gaming machine , and as such I have spent some extra cash flow on a new Vid card, and less on DVD burners and things. an option I may choose is to go with an ATI x850 saving some coin then purchasing this :

Revision : By selecting PC3200 Memory ( since no Overclocking ) I was able to bump to a 7800GTX 256 ( with room for a second one later with SLI instead of a single 6800U 512mb )

If I have no plans of OC'ing it ... Would I be just as well suited buying PC3200 Memory since tha'ts what the board supports ?

Or should I go with the PC4000 since the On Chip FSB is 1000 ?

IMO -Get a cheaper case. No need for a Thermaltake case really. Get a Turbo XPider or something if you are into that type of design. That or get the Antec case that looks similar to it (Dave / Massa has it and it is nice).

Other than that - seems solid really. Does the asus board have dual SLI and an AGP slot?

The main draw to me for that CAse is the 2x 120mm Fans. and that it's a FULL tower case ... I like having room to work in there.

I will look into the Xspider though.

No AGP on the Motherboard. Just the 2 PCIx SLI. and a single PCIx

2 x PCI Express X 16 (*SLI mode : x8 , x8 *Default Single VGA mode : x16, x1)

these mobos overclock different than what you are used to, there is no FSB in the old sense, so you can use a different divider for the memory/cpu to crank up the cpu Mhz while leaving the memory at a slower speed, or even lower the memory timeings and not really see any difference.

you could keep your current memory and save some money.

Well , My old Ram is staying with my current system to my daughter.

If I go PC4000 it's going to be lower latency so I can afford it.

With this version of PC3200 I get 2226 ...

So you guys think the PC 4000 is worth it even if I dont' OC it ?

Thank you Btw :)

i'm not sure of the timeings with the PC4000 ram you might get, but with the PC3200 you can raise them and not see much difference to get a higher speed.

you might also consider getting a pair of decent value ram 1 GB sticks, seems as though some games now can use more than 1Gb of ram depending on what resolution you run the games at, like BF2 can use it for sure.

i would check some other forums to see what people are running on that mobo to make sure whatever memory you get is compatible.

maybe look into a 7800GT also, Brent has a good review.
