************Free Computer Associates anti-virus software, one year - no catches!

Post by ghost »

Computer Associates International. Good stuff, I've used it for years now at home.

http://store.ca.com/dr/v2/ec_main.entry25?page=PYPCtrialPage_MSsite&client=ComputerAssociates&sid=55939&CID=190471

No catches, just register and download. Absolutely free for one year, no ads, etc.

I just unistalled Symantec AV at work and installed this instead. Updated virus definitions are issued just about every day, not once a week or so with Norton/Symantec.

Again, highly recommended. :thumb: If you need av software but can't afford to pay anything, you should seriously consider taking advantage of this deal.

I am not connected in any way to this, other than being a long-time user, and I'm just passing along a cherry opportunity. :)

Thanks for the tip Ghost :)

I'll take a look at it but am still holding a bit of a grudge against CAI from many years ago.

Before their EZTrust AV software they had InnoculateIT, an excellent free AV program. In their product description they stated their belief that AV programs should be free because (paraphrasing here), just as no one should have to drive a car without brakes than no one should have to use a computer without an AV program...ie AV are integral to a healthy PC.

Then they dropped support for it and switched to the pay EZTrust :D

I'm sure they had their reasons and probably would've kept it free if they could've, but in the meantime I'm happy with AVG and Avast.

Will check it out though and probably end up trying it out anyway, thanks :)

They got bought out or something like that.

I remember Innoculate IT - I used it too for a while until it was no longer supported.

Nah. No buy out, just dropped the support for Innoculate IT and offered EZTrust at a radically reduced rate for a period of time.

The discounts they are offering at the moment aren't too shabby either.

This doesn't apply?????? At bottom of page.
Exclusive offer for Microsoft customers. Free 12-month software subscription to CA's eTrust EZ Antivirus. Valid for new users only. Limit 1 per household. Not to be combined with any other offer. Annual subscriptions can be renewed after first year at current renewal rate. Free software offer expires 8/1/05.*ICSA Certification means the software must detect 100% of "in-the-wild" viruses. See http://www.icsa.net.
Must check if the offer is valid for Aus as well. :D Thanks Ghost. :thumb: It is. :thumb:

I wouldn't mind trying NOD32 free for a year, that's a good one too.

It's an excellent one! My top choice even. Only 39 bucks a year, 60% renewal...so nearly free. They have a trial, but not a year one.

To be honest, I'm not fond of CAI's AV products, (nor backup products for that matter...and I even have a friend who's a programmer for them at their Long Island NY office) I've had clients which had viruses slip past it, notably their InnocuLAN product on corporate networks, one client even had an outbreak drop their server that it was supposed to be protecting.

Microsoft distributed this on a security update CD a couple of years ago, I "think" it was a full year trial.

actually norton releases a definition daily, but its not through auto update. They gear the daily update to servers and the such. I guess they want to save bandwith

Eeesh, don't start me on backup software. CA and Veritas...I'm not happy with either. Cobian backup is so easy but not as full-featured as I'd like.

The CA AV prog has served me well and I can't speak on behalf of your clients. All I know is that in the past they've done very well and is one of the better AV products out there, like NOD32.

Yesterday I was cleaning a hard drive and scanned it with the Symantec AV product (v. 9, updated) - it found 5 viruses. Then I scanned it with the Trend Micro online deal - it found 8 more. Then I scanned it with the CA AV prog - and it found 74 more!! :thumb:

I'm starting to become displeased with Veritas lately, too bloated, and I find myself spending, rather, wasting, too much time troubleshooting errors. I think they started falling out of my favor around version 9, maybe 8.5 or so. Prior to that, always bulletproof and direct for me.

Cobian, yeah, that's find for single user desktops, but my need is usually server based. Often Small Business Server, so a need for Exchange mail support, sometimes SQL, or open file agents.

Might start looking towards Acronis for server backup solutions soon.

Hopefully CAI improved their enterprise AV products. Prior ones were clunky at best, their centralized management left a lot to be desired. Not to mention the trouble in calling, and trying to understand their outsourced support (first big US tech company to outsource to India), in a noisy server room.

I'm using Veritas v. 9 and it spontaneously reboots the server when I'm using it! I need to apply a couple of patches I d/l but have to come in after hours to do it. I don't want to mess with it during normal hours. :irate:

I haven't yet used an enterprise av solution from CA.

I've been using EZ AV and the Firewall (Zone Labs product)for a very long time...
Yes, CA gets alot of bad press in the security forums and it's not KAV,
but it is a good product and updates Mon-Friday almost without fail. And the whole AV was upgraded not so long ago.

eTrust AV is still available;
and it uses both the VET and Innoculateit engine.

EZ AV updates posted regularly in the Security Updates by yours truly ;)

Yay for freeware!

Free = Good

I would have a hard time getting rid of Bullguard, being updated every 6 hours and having synchronous backup to a online drive is excellent.

As a rule of thumb, you should not try to have two av progs installed on your computer. Just FYI. ;)

Anyone here has Road Runner? Go to the RR.com site and look under Extras and freebies. They are giving away CA Suite that includes the AV, the firewall and PESTPATROL ...its also customizeable to where u can install just one program or more. I installed Pestpatrol. Good for one year free

My ISP, Cogeco, is giving away free F-Secure Internet Suite for life! I don't really want it because I only need the antivirus and I asked Cogeco if I could have a license for an antivirus but they said no.

Oh and thanks ghost :)

did u try to install it and customize it? It may have the option to choose what you want to install like CA did.

There are no options really, the only way I can do it it is uninstalling the firewall and stuff after its installed.

Had some problems but it gives much greater peace of mind. I don't like having either running full time but have AVG and Avast running on-demand.

Thats cool too..just do it right after installation. You still get the same effect of just what you wanted.
I just unchecked everything except for Pestpatrol and installed mine. If it didnt have that option was going to do what you said you could.

sometimes having 2 installed gives off false positives..just be careful when it comes to Windows OS Files in that case.
