ST. LOUIS AREA PEOPLE w/@home

Post by natb1 »

I was wondering if there are any people in this area getting good service from AT&T@home?

Im on the other side of the river with AT&T and have ALWAYS suffered from PL, intermittant connections, and slow DLs.

In the evening (surprisingly) it is at its worse!

See my post in "PL-all of a sudden with@home etc.." Topic.

My problem is related to a node in Overland (St.Louis) (bb1-se5-0.ovrlnd1.mo.home.net )
.Is this node in your path?
You may need someone "outside" to check this path.

Here is what I posted on Thursday.

"I talked to the AT&T@home local supervisor for St. Charles today. He told me that they do have an overload going through Overland to Kansas City. He told me they need to put a second line in. He told me the name of the line but I can't remember it. He told me it will be about 2 weeks before it is installed.
I have sent at least 10 e-mails to AT&T about this ping problems with no results. I'm happy I know what is going on now.

Thanks for the reply BUD,

Ive had this prob for ever.

Your Trace route looks like something "MY PC" would have generated!!!!

I wish I could "broadcast" an e-mail to ALL @home users in my area.

A few complainers dont get much done.

Im not to optimistic about that "Two Week" quote you got though.

Having worked with routers a bit recently I think the fe1 in the overland line means that they have a fast Ethernet (100Mbps) port on that router. No wonder it's so darn slow in the evenings. Happy this AM very sad tonight. Hope it really is 2 weeks or I'll be asking Verizon about DSL again VERY quickly.

I too go trough that hop. I'm sorry to report to you guys that you are all getting screwed, especially the new installs. @home has been aware of this problem since March 2000, that's when the problem first started. It is now 10 months later, and every @home tech I talk to, I call every night to complain, says that this is a high priority issue but there in no information available as to when it will be fixed. That's because they haven't started working on the issue yet. I have had the service for over a year I my house, but have been very dissatisfied with it since late March or early April. I keep holding out hope that @home pulls their thumbs out of their butts and uses them to pull cable, but I don't see that happening any time soon. I have reverted back to a dial up modem for gaming, and now only use the cable for downloads. Sad isn't it? You new installs should be able to sue for false advertising or something. Their commercials are all LIES.

I would like his name and email too. I live in O'Fallon IL. but still go through the overland hop. The more people complain and demand refunds or credits the faster this will get fixed.

This man is not the person who you complain to and demand refunds or credits from. This is the person who sends out the trucks and tells them where to go. There has been times when I didn’t have block sync and I called the 888-262-6300 number and was told it will be two or three weeks before they could get someone out to me. I called this man and he would have someone come out that day or at least by the next day. There is no way I’m going to give his # out to someone who is going to complain and demand refunds from him. I will give his # out to people in the St. Charles area who want to ask him about the problem and be nice about it. The only reason I didn’t call him sooner and ask him about the problem was because I thought the problem was in Kansas City and he wouldn’t be able to do anything about it.

Calm down Chief, I didn't mean to call him and demand refunds/credits. Call the 888 number or do the web chat for that. Now go unbunch yout panties. :) I just want to get some kind of idea as to when this is going to be resolved. The 888 and web chat techs are clueless that the problem even exists until you have them do a tracert to you PC or Router in my case. I just wish other people in our area would call and complain instead of just accepting the piss poor service. Damn I wish DSL would hurry up and get here!

I think I'll plan on an e-mail complaint a day.

But it would be nice to have a tech give an honest answer about when they might fix the problem. (Bud I sent you an e-mail) Perhaps I can get my company to sell them an OC48 from St. Louis to KC!! :-)

The e-mail folks did send a response to my first message saying that XXXX "has been created to alert system engineers of this issue". I'm running a batch job to PING and TRACERT to www every 30 minutes 24 hours a day. I plan to send them my daily PING and TRACERT logs each day. I may have got free install and 2 months free service but they can start their free service period from when the service works as advertized not now. I'll see what happens!

Looks like great service between 1AM and 7 AM. If I only didn't have to sleep.

St. Charles/Overland MO Update

I managed to speak with the contact Buddy gave me. Things should get better as of Feb 1 for everyone going through that Overland MO POP. The upgrade plans are:

1. As of Feb 1 a second DS3 (aka T3) 45Mbps line will be operational between Overland and KC. That should help a lot but may only halve the problem - will have to see

2. By end of Feb a DS3 will be run from the ST. Peters head and that should become a POP like Overland. I guess then they'll move all St. Charles people onto that POP and we won't go through Overland at all.

3. In the 3rd or 4th quarter of this year they will have an OC48 (Optical 2.5 Gbps) link between Overland and KC. That's the equivalent of 48 DS3's!!! AT that time everyone may get put back to Overland but with an OC48 who cares - plenty of room on that size link.

Just have to hope this all transpires. Seemed a very nice guy and as he as the same service we do (i.e. it sucks) he knows exactly what we are unhappy about. He was also very responsive - called back with 15 minutes.

Surprisingly I haven't had a response to my e-mail checking on the ticket they opened and providing them with my first 4 days of logs! I guess I'll give them a bit longer to respond and then send them some more logs.

Let's hope that DS3 gets turned up within a week as was said.

If you use the system at the time you posted your message you'll love it:-)

Unless they really do add bandwidth as they say you are going to you'll hate it or at least be very disappointed. Evening use really is barely over 56K modem speeds. Really bad evenings it's frankly unusable. However, during the earlier hours I have (happens to be about 6:30 AM for me) I have done speeds tests and today got 1.8Mbps downloads. That's way over the basic DSL 768 DL speed assuming DSL is available. Verizon can give me DSL but not ISP service so I won't do that coz I'm not having 2 companies involved to blame each other when things don't work. Other times of the day, 10:30 after my install, I was seeing 15/16 times faster than 56K.

If you've got the free install and 2 months free service I guess you have nothing to loose in trying it.

They gave me a Motorola SB3100 which seems pretty new - don't think you get a choice. I'd suggest you ask them to use a NIC rather than USB network interface. I provided my own to make sure they didn't do the USB and I didn't have to pay $24.95 for one of theirs.

I prefer the router solution to software. For $120 you have a hardware firewall plus a 10/100 switch. Not sure if you network but those $20 10/100 NICs are great for moving stuff around on your local machines and it really is about 10 times as fast. The switch makes a big difference. I personally have the SMC Barricade 4 port. Just make sure you read the @home appendix in the back of the PDF manual otherwise you'll never get it to work. There's a specific setup for @home.

There's probably nothing wrong with using ICS - I did with my dial up. It shows you completely blocked at the test sights. I just prefer the h/w solution with an always on link and getting the 10/100 switch as a bonus help my local LAN setup. I've already had "visitors" to my system in addition to the @home daily scans but 4 security sites I've used found no vunerabilities at all. Juts one port showing closed on Shields Up at grc.com

See what happens but I would NOT cancel your existing ISP just yet. I still have my dial up and second phone line for now!

Greetings All!

I wish to jump on this bandwagon. I'm in St. Peters and am getting tired of not being able to use my cable modem in the evening hours.

Bud - I too would like the contact information you mentioned for the guy in St. Charles. I promise to be nice. :)

I would agree that enough calls might speed the process up a bit.

Thanks!

Thanks much for the help, Simon. I am networked throughout the office/home for 2 desktops and a laptop and the D-Link Router reviewed on this site is "in the mail".(I have a D-Link 10/100 network already) Primary Network (or whoever they are this week) has done me justice so far and I'll keep them for the rest of the month anyway. @home are coming to install on Monday and I'll post any problems/concerns pronto. thanks again for the help.

Hello. I'm across the river in WoodRiver,Illinois. I'm not going thru Overlands hop or dont see it on trace route. But i do go thru the one in Kscymo.1 Getting pretty much the same results as most are. Been calling @home techs since Nov. and getting nothing done. Never answer questions I ask. Just get there standard answer to anything I ask." WE understand that it can be frustrating when your AT&T Cable Internet service dose not seem to be operating to standard. There are a number of possible causes for a reduction in download times and Web-page access rates" Also was told the would not send out a tech to check things out. So I'm gonna be reading to see how things progress. Thanks in advance

Well this looks like it could be promising. I have never seen anything on the outage board before, even when they were having problems.

Yes @home does suck, at least in this area. The networl upgrades that were supposed to help the speed issues, didn't. Just another failure you can add to the list of many for @home. I can not say I am supprised though. I have given them until this friday, Feb. 9th 2000, to resolve the issues or I am going back to dial up. Hell I couldn't even download the @home 2000 software last night any faster than 0.6kps ans was getting 99% packet loss. I know with dial up I will at least hit 3-7kps. So much for lightening fast internet from @home.

Does anyone know if the upgrade planned for 2/1/01 actually occurred? I haven't been able to get on @Home for the past two days so I can't check the performance.
I got my @Home service installed about a week ago and like most of you I'm terribly disappointed with the congestion in the evenings and weekends. I am willing to join the e-mail effort if someone would send me the e-mail address of an AT&T @Home person who might actually care about our problems. (I promise not to send any flame e-mails, but I would at least like them to realize how many people are unhappy with their service.)

When I got home from the Gym last night I just about had a heart attack! I was getting 150ms pings to the ultima online server that I play on! So I started macroing my chars to build their skill while i went to eat, I was also running a cont. ping to the UO server. When I got back my pings were in the 800ms plus range again. So to answer your question about the upgrades, NO. If they did do any upgrades it didn't make I damn bit of difference. The service is still slower than falling tree sap in winter.

Well, back on dial up again.....can't get through on @home, so back to plan B. The contractor/installer told me "not to believe a word they say" about upgrading the headends or lines. The Overland hop will "continue to be a problem until enough subscribers are on to make it economically feasible" I guess we're trapped like rats.....
On the good side....I've been getting some awesome download speeds when I get on early in the morning. Too bad I'm a night owl......

What kind of upstream speeds are you guys seeing? I've checked mine several times at different times of day. My upload speeds range from about 30Kbits/sec to 48Kbits/sec (using www.thebandwidthplace.com). Ugh, not much faster than my 28.8K dial up. Even early in the morning when my download speed is excellent the upload is still less than 50K. I was assuming @Home would cap the upload around 128Kbps so this seems terribly slow. Are these speeds typical or do I maybe have a problem that is holding back my upstream transfers?
