Cannot restart computer

Post by sprint777 »

If this isn't the right spot for this post lmk. I bought a used computer. It will not restart, I have to disconnect the power cord to restart. It will load my os ok, and I can do a normal shutdown and turn on the computer with the power button. When I go start, turn off computer, restart or when I download software and it asks for restart, it will start the process to the point where it says windows is shutting down, then the screen freezes, mouse etc. Any help? I again apoligize if this is not the right site for this type question.

Let me guess, you're using Windows 98?

did you do a complete format of the hard drive before you installed winxp or did you just try to install windows over the existing setup? Was the hd infected with viri before you tried to install windows?
reason i ask is that a virus could still be lurking if you did not format. also, you might want to format the mbr (c:\fdisk /mbr) to make sure there's no nastly little boot record virus hanging out in there.

other than that, show us a 'hijack this' (http://www.google.com) log so we can see what processes are running. kinda sounds like it might be a particular process hanging the system up, which could be related to incompatible or malfunctioning hardware.

test the hard drive for errors with its own utility disk software.

thanks for the replies. I was able to take care of problem by flashing bios with update. Format and new install and everything is fine. thanks again.
