How often do y'all update your virus definitions?

Post by Humboldt »

I've heard recommendations of a couple of times a week. Isn't that kind of extreme?

I don't pay for updates so it's not like money is an issue. Besides, isn't Innoculate it supposed to be able to "learn" about virus patterns and potentially recognize new ones on its own?

Same here... When I get bored of surfing *ahem, bikini sites, ahem* I do it more often. Some weeks I do it every day

Hi Humboldt

i usually check them out whenever i notice the icon or do a thorough test. sometimes once a week sometimes more.

i think a good guide is that whenever a fuss is being made over a new virus you can expect to see new upgrades to the system.

it takes what 2 Min.s so what the hell.

better safe than sorry. but the odd's of actually getting a virus are i don't think that high.

i use PM Mail rather than Outlook or whatever. harder to target and a better program to boot.

this takes away most of the worry right there.

regards minir

If you haven't seen it already all over this forum, there's a great free one at cai.com, called Innoculate IT. They have free updates too.

Like they say at the CAI site, a computer without virus protection is like a car without brakes.

No problem.

I've used it for a couple of years now with no problems. Even some of the security bad asses like Ken use it. :)

Has served me well for 2 1/2 years.

I check for new definitions everyday. That doesn't mean that there are new ones, but I do check and run a full system scan everyday. It may seem like overkill, but I have 2 teens that download everything and check nothing. I've found 1 trojan, 8 viruses etc. Just a good habit to do! ;)

I update definitions once a week. Got into the practice a few years ago. I have intercepted one virus about six months ago and have not had any other virus activity.

Like to keep it that way!! :D
New keyboard, but still no "any" key.

Since when does Win2K have a built-in firewall? Maybe Server or AS do, but Win2K Pro does not.

I don't need the Eicar test. If anyone wants to see if their anti-virus works, I'll loan you my 2 teenagers! They'll find you an average of 2 viruses or trojans a month. lol
:p
