WD HD Question

Post by KevinF »

Is there anything you can do so that a WD HD only spins when it is accessed?

I believe that with some drives you can install a jumper that will make them only spin when accessed, but WD does not list this configuration for this particular drive.

It's called acoustic management.. you can turn it on with Data Lifeguard Tools I believe.. but be aware that is does impact performance.

I don't think it will completely stop the drive from spinning..

What am I kidding you about?

The drive spins 24 hours, 7 days a week.

It has started to make a slight whining noise, probably because the bearing is wearing due to the fact that it spins all day and night 365 days a year.

I figured that if I can only make it "turn on" when it is actually being accessed it would be a good thing.

You could always turn the computer off when you're not using it, or set the power settings up to shut the drive off after so many minutes of inactivity.

To clarify things, it is an external USB drive installed on a networked PC.
