How can I learn to type on a keyboard properly?

Post by fixationdarknes »

The way I type on a keyboard is really jacked up. I feel like my speed is limited to the little fingers I use. On my left hand, I use: thumb, index finger, middle finger, ring finger. On my right hand, I only use: my index finger. So, that's a total of 5 fingers when most people I know use at least 7 or more. So, it's really awkward how I type to most people. And it still is weird for me. Is there a cool program out there on the net that will teach me how to type properly?

I don't really know which fingers are supposed to do what, since my fingers are so accustomed to just flying around all over the keyboard. Also, if I don't practice typing properly, and I just chat on AIM and stuff, I'm just going to habitually type the way I normally do, which is what I don't want.

Wow, crazy fast replies. I know there are many programs out there that teach how to type, but are there any that you guys know of that are proven to work well? Any experience with any of them?

EDIT: Lol, Jim, I actually have that game that my brother downloaded. It's somewhere in this house on a CD. But that doesn't really teach how to type, does it? I know it'll help speed, but I don't even really know how to type. It just motivates me to want to kick the crap out of the monsters.

And no, TTOTD is more about speed than proper form. Try some of the other suggestions (which, uh...just leaves Set's).

Ask Meggie to help you. She types really well considering her keyboard doesn't have a Shift key or a period key.

Or better yet YardofStuf. He types really really well.

I took typewriting class before.. but, even after the class, I could only type like 20words/min.. And then I started to chat online with like 5 to 6 people at once.. which really force you to type fast.. And now, I type like 75 words/min!!! Maybe not as fast as some other people, but that was a big improvement..

I learned just from chatting on AIM and playing MMOs. Last I checked I typed approx 55 words per min, but haven't clocked myself recently. GF also learned just from playing EverQuest for a year and types bout as fast as I do.

All it is is practice... lots of it.

just take a class at school....I learned how to type in like 5th and 6th grade...and that was 12-13 years ago. the rest came from practice...

you have your home row....the middle set of keys....the F and J keys usually have a little raised nub...this is where your index fingers go...then type..

take two or three programming classes at the same time

if you didn't know how to type going in....you'll know before the semester is out

I didn't type correctly until I took Advanced Java and Advanced VB at the same time (everything went to #!% before the semester was out, dropped Java, crapped through VB, and was a complete wreck, but I learned how to type)
still folding away, haven't been on as much lately

I type classifieds at a newspaper and I am pretty quick. I got that way by practicing on Mavis Beacon (not the BDSM version lol)..which is extremely boring..also by chatting with some of my buddies. I also took a couple typing classes in high school, but that was with a typewriter..
