Charter Communications, any good?

Hi. Recently it seems that charter communications has come in our area, and we were thinking about switching from DSL to Cable.

Well, I went to the charter site, and maybe I didn't look hard enough, but I didn't see anything that talked about what type of addresses they have, or etc...

A friend of mine told me that charter was offering a 3MB down / 1-3MB up plan at the moment. Is this ture, or not?

Right now, my connection reports 211kbps upload speed, which isn't very good for the server that I run. It's quite laggy.

So, what type of addresses does charter offer? Static, Dynamic? What I need is a static address, and something better than 211kbps upload speed (+256kbps if possible), and they must allow FTP, SMTP, POP3, IMAP, IRC, and HTTP servers. Otherwise the connection will be useless.

Does anyone know if they offer these packages?

I have Charter and they only provide dynamic addressing for residential customers, and they don't allow residential customers to run servers either.

But they do have a small bussiness/corporate service that does provide for static addressing and server functions. I don't know what the pricing is for that service, but I'm sure it's probably more expensive than the residential service.

You'll have to call them to get the pricing since it's not listed on Charters website.

Page @ dslreports.com on various ISP's (alot actually). Scroll down and click on links to "Charter pipeline" (Charter pipeline = Charter Communications) and also the reviews link. I almost moved to an area where charter was the only ISP in the area and after reading some reviews I'm glad I didn't.

I use Charter. When I first got it, it was down more than it was up, and getting someone to actually check the lines was a pain in the butt.

I'm on the 3 meg package, and for about the last 6 months or so, the speed has really sucked. I usually get 3.2 mbps for about a 3rd of the day, and then it ranges any where from 400 kbps to 1500 kpbs the rest of the day.

Before this started happening, and they installed and fixed nodes and lines, I was consistently getting over 3mbps. Awhile after they started running the add on tv offering the 3 mbps package for a little of nothing is when this crap started.

What pisses me off more then anything, is that these damn manual reading techs want to lay the problem with my pc simply because they haven't a clue as to what to check. I know what one of the major problems is, and there has only been one tech willing to admit it.

I'm about fed up with paying a nice little hunk of change for such poor service and prefomance. I'm certainly going to check into DSL and other options.

Well, that kinda changes my mind a bit....

I think we have decided to stay with the DSL though, because it is working flawlessly with my server right now...i just wish i had a better upload speed.

I've had the Charter Pipeline 3MB down service for about three months now. They've only dropped service once in that time.

I'm not a big uploader so I haven't been to worried what my speed is but it's usually close to 3 down.

I've been on Charter for about a year and a half, recently upgrading to the 3mb plan. I honestly can't tell any difference in speed from the 1.5 package that I bought a year ago... maybe it's my modem.

I doubt that it's your modem. I would go back to the other plan and save money and get the same speed.
