SP2 and IE delay

Post by CBB007 »

I upgraded my Windows XP to SP2.
And I noticed that in IE there is now allways a 3-5 sec delay before it starts downloading the webpage... When I use Mozilla I don't have any delays.
I use Trend Micro Internet Security. Windows Firewall is disabled.
Any ideas?
Thanks for any help I get.

Services

Post by CBB007 »

I had disabled allready the security center service and security account management service.
What is strange, is that only IE is affected with the delay, but not the mozilla

startup

it does happened all the time.
As soon as you select a new website... it sits and thinks for a litle while before it starts any activity on the cable modem. Like its trying to translate the address first. With mozilla as soon as I enter he webpage, there is activity on the modem and the pages load immediately.

I'm asking some guys at other boards to see what they come up with about this as well as testing my self so hang in try this

See if this helps I admit i'm have simmialar and so is other people. First goto strat menu run type cmd type ipconfig/all write down what it saids for dns servers write them down usually two sets of numbers.

Goto my computer settings netwok options click your lan connection double click tcpip click i wish to manually assign my ips

give the computer an adress of 192.168.1.xx xx is any number other then 1
subnet 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.1

Dns the numbers you wrote down

Then goto admin tools serivces then disable dchp services apply the changes and reboot

manual tcp/ip

Post by CBB007 »

I have tried to use manual TCP/IP settings, disabling Qos Packet scheduler ..
No changes with the delay in IE... I have a afeeling it is some setting in IE that is causing it.. I have checked some other boards too, but no one has a solution for this yet.

IE Delay

Post by gerryg »

There is a limit of 10 connections per second in SP2. There is a patch that should increase it to whatever you want. I have a slipstreamed SP2 CD that I installed on my spare machine to see how it would work before putting it on the main computers. The patch took care of the slow page loading for me. Go to the following site to get the patch and be sure to read the forum on how to use it. There is a lot of useful information there. Hope this will help you out.

I got it. Thank you.

Before I install it, I had done the registry tweak for SP1 that increases the max connections already. I could see it being reset once SP2 is installed. Does SP2 have something different about that makes the registry tweak useless?

Installing SP2 didn't reset MaxConnections. If I read everything correctly it is the way tcpip.sys handles open connections. By default, tcpip.sys in SP2 allows only 10 concurrent open connections. It is a security measure to help stop the spread of trojans and worms.

I'm not sure about the reg entry being useless though. If you installed the patch mentioned above or got the hotfix mentioned in the Microsoft KB 884020 article the entry should be valid.

I had same problem - IE would hang for some time loading a new site whilst 'Detect[ing] proxy settings'

I have unchecked 'automatically detect settings' in Tools > Internet Options > Connections > Settings and the delay has gone.

Dunno what knock-on effects this might have but it cured the problem for me...
