WD Caviar Drive Question

Post by KevinF »

I have an external USB hard drive that that use a WD Caviar drive. I noticed that the drive spins constantly, even when I am not accessing it.

Is there any type of software or mod I can do so that it will only spin when I access data on it? It seems to get fairly hot and I figure that if it is not running 24/7 it should last longer.

Under the display options(right click desktop then properties) go to screen saver, then go to power settings. Under there should be a drop down list for turning off hard drives after a certain amount time. I don't know if it will work for usb hard drives, but I guess you can always try it. :D

My laptop runs a Toshiba Power Management application so I can't select that.
