I have a 36gig raptor on my primary system and 2 80GB drives in RAID0 where all my applications and games live.YeOldeStonecat wrote:Thought you had Raptors...since getting used to mine, simply can't go back to 7,200 rpm drives...no way, no how.
On my lanning system though I use to have 1 120GB hard drive and 3 40GB hard drives.
Now I'll have 2 200GB hard drives in RAID0 and possibly leave the 120GB in there if I need even more space.
Gonna be fast with lots of space.

Brent, have you read the recent article concerning RAID 0 and its ineffectiveness?
I don't have the link but it was /. linked and widespread about 3 weeks ago.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to piss on your cake or anything, the drives are awesome. I'm just wondering why you'd risk losing data with RAID 0.

I agree the risk is greater with having to rely on two drives. But I've been running two WD 80GB drives in RAID0 for over a year now on my primary system without issue. The key to making hard drives last is to keep them very cool, which I do, I have two 80mm fans blowing directly over them.el bob wrote:Brent, have you read the recent article concerning RAID 0 and its ineffectiveness?

I'd prefer to have the extra speed, which is a noticeable gain to me, benchmarkable as well.

I think I found the article you were talking about el bob: http://www.anandtech.com/storage/showdoc.aspx?i=2101
the thing about that review though is that they only RAID0'd the new raptor II's which are already blindling fast on their own
I wish they had RAID0'd some of the other drives like the WD SE and the Seagate Baracuda.
Anyways, I'm just gonna have to do my own benches when I get em
I'll try a single drive first and test load times, througput, access time, etc... then I'll RAID em and test it, i'll find what works best for me
