Wireless router

Post by jwiddy »

Hello,

Due to a baby on the way,(3 weeks!) I'm being forced to turn my pc room into the baby room. So i need to relocate the pc to a spot that i cant relocate my cable modem to- SO, I need wireless. I have a friend who has big problems with his wireless Linksys (even going from his kitchen to the bedroom) and I have another friend using a Belkin and he's giving people in nearby buildings internet access.(for a small fee) Is belkin better?
What do you guys/girls suggest.

Thanks
JW

Always preferred Linksys myself. If that isnt the route you want to go I suggest Netgear. Havent really tested out Belkin so I cant say about them.

Linksys is horrible and can interfere with your modems SnR, netgear has always been solid ive installed several netgear gateways. Belkin routers are the cheaper alternative, although ive had several people tell me how badly they work.

Wee96 with your modems SnR is that way some people tend to have synch issues with some modems and linksys?? How does a router effect snr?? just curious

I like linksys I had some issuses but frirmware took care of it every product has it's pros and cons netgear is good but if you are on dsl ppoe mtu adjustment can be trickey to do. I was told zonenet is pretty good.

I have D-Link DI-624 and have had zero problems with itin the 8 months i've owned it. i have a little network set up here with a Win2k PDC, RAS TS server (heh, even slapped Exchange2003 on it for kicks) and I have no issues connecting to my home network via VPN and accessing stuff for work.

Me too, but only two months for me. I went over to my next door neighbors with my laptop and had a 90% signal strenght. Now I can get away from anyone while I'm on the system.

When a router is wireless, it uses RF, though the frequency is up near 2.4ghz, for some reason the linksys routers seem to interfere with modem frequencies which here are 591mhz, causing a problem in the SnR. Its one of the many reasons modems lose sync.

I use a linksys with no problems. I first bought a netgear and took it back the next day, performance for me was crappy. Linksys was perfect out of box and never have any problems with it. Just wanted to throw that out there!!! :thumb:

I would suggest Netgear

I've probably installed 10-15 netgear MR814v2 with fantastic results. Its cheap, reliable and performs very well, what else could you ask for?

Belkin makes good cables...I'll leave it at that.

Linksys makes easy to use, average quality, average performance products...there are others out there which will outperform, but I often use Linksys in a lot of setups. Nice compatibility, I've had good luck with quite literally hundreds and hundreds of them.

Netgear makes some higher quality stuff, stronger performance, but their support stranded me bad more than once...so I no longer use them. (on some higher end business grade switches too...you'd think they'd have strong support for them to VARs. That's another reason Linksys won be back)

DLink, much as I don't like most of their products...I have to admit their wireless products are strong performers and good compatibility.
