Best Anti-virus Software?

I'm currently using Norton 2002, but I'm having problems with the auto-protect feature. It won't enable. I've tried completely removing the definitions and software, reinstalling everything, and it still won't enable. So I figure it's time to upgrade.

I'm thinking of going to Norton 2004 Pro (so I can use it on my laptop as well), but that is going to cost me CAD$60. I've also seen an anti-virus program that is offered by Telus (local provider) for CAD$4/mo, but I don't know how good it is.

Is there something else I should be looking at that is a better value? Do you think the Telus version would be worth trying? Or should I penny up and get the Norton upgrade?

I don't think $60 to upgrade to a newer software to protect your systems is a harsh investment.

Option 3: Don't pay any money and get an anti-virus that is one of the best, if not the best, out today. Avast 4! Antivirus.

There's really no reason to be shelling out any cash for antivirus software when you can find free software that's better, faster, and smaller than the "pay" software that's being pushed now.

Take a look at NOD32 ( http://www.nod32.com) and AVG ( http://www.grisoft.com) both have trial versions and arent pigs

AVG Free Edition is now available for all single home users worldwide!

Its as good as there is imho and costs nothing. It's easy to set up and update as well. A no brainer. Many people here use it.

Hmmm how good is Avast compared to all the other anti-virus softwares? Any reviews?

I use it in a home and school environment. It's out-performed Norton's and AVG's antivirus products (all the newest versions with full updates).

Just a note...if real time protection isn't able to load its services...there's a problem going on, such as a virus that's currently trying to knock out the service, or something else "slightly off" with your system. A lot of viruses now, the first thing they do on a system now is try to disable the AV services.

When did it first start having problems? Was there a prior antivirus software on this system before Norton? If so, was it fully removed before installing Norton?

I do suggest trying to fully uninstall 2002 by using Symantecs removal tool, a little freebie program that uninstalls quite a bit more complete than the windows installer service. It's called RNAV2003.EXE. Do this both for trying to reinstall Norton to give it another shot, or if you're going to use another AV app like Avast or AVG. If you're going to try AVG, follow the trick (thanks to Blebs99), as their default definition update servers are a bit overwhelmed resource wise, and some people are having problems getting their updates.

"Go into the AVG folder (it could be named Grisoft), and rename the URL.INI as URLOLD.INI. Copy the following with notepad and save it as URL.INI in the same folder.

2=ftp.grisoft.com
3=www.grisoft.com

[SERVER_URL]
1=http://free.grisoft.cz/softw/60/fe

If trying to reinstall Norton again, before you reboot after that first install, Start==>Run==>type in "LUALL" without the quotes. This runs the live update manually. Do it a couple of times (assuming you have a live internet connection) before you reboot.

I've been using AVG, but I want to try Avast and Nod32 ...

used NAV for years, but it just seemed to get more bloated w/ each release ...

no probs w/ AVG so far ...

Make sure you don't have any other AV program on your H/D when you try Avast. When I attempted to use Avast with AVG uninstalled but with the install files stored in a folder, Avast would not work.
