Inspiron 8000 won't return from standby, CRAP!

Post by el bob »

Dell Inspiron 8000 with Windows XP

Regardless of how the laptop enters standby mode (folding down the screen, keyboard command, period of inactivity), I can not get it to come back to life without freezing.

What I do when I want to take it out of standby mode is press the power button and wait for Windows to load (come back to life).

However, all that happens when I press the power button is my desktop and the mouse pointer show up, but are frozen.

The laptop always locks up completely. The fan runs at full power and you can't turn the laptop off without holding the power button down for ~5 seconds.

Any idea what is wrong or how I can fix it?

TIA,
el bob

you're not alone.

While having a computer go into a 'stand-by' mode is a great idea, it's had problems from the start. I remember my old compaq persario having problems with standby mode as well. While I have talked to people that can fold down the laptop and have it gracefully slide into standby mode, they seem to be the exception.

My dell latitude wont wake from standby either and I just considered it a given. Perhaps someone else will come along and give you some better guidance. Or you can find a forum more suited to your question, like a dell forum or [h] mobile computing.

good luck!

just be thankful for the faster start/shut down times of winxp compared to win2k!

My Gateway 505 does that too. When i leave for a considerable ammount of time (30 min +) i just leave my screen up.

I've found hibernate and standby to act up more often than work correctly.

I disable those features. In power settings, "always on"...and select "when I press the power button, computer SHUTS OFF", and disable hibernate.

Thanks guys

I did actually end up posting at [H] Mobile Computing and Dell Inspiron Power Management forums.

The people at Dell confirmed what you guys seem to be saying about how flaky standby is.

Here's a link to what they're saying in case you are interested:

The thing that gets me is why MS keeps putting those features in the OS when they've been flaky since day one.

At least they took them out as default settings in XP, thanks MS.

it's been worse in desktops for me than in my laptop. my notebook is perfect when standing by, but my desktop actualy shuts down and does a cold boot when i turn it on.

Some issues with 'standby' can be fixed with settings in the BIOS, but all in all it's still a flaky feature.
