invalid boot ini on startup

Post by skyman »

When i start my comp,before the xp window,i get at the top left a msg saying invalid boot ini
booting from c:windows\

After i copied an old harddrive into a folder on my 2nd drive F: I have since deleted the folder after removing what i wanted, now every time i start my comp, that invalid boot ini come's up. I know this is part of the problem for sure,but i don't know how to fix it. When i do a file search,i find only one boot ini file c:WINDOWS/pss
Any idea's what this is anyone?

My comp works fine,it's just VERY annoying to see that promt every time,LOL

To edit your boot.ini file right click on My Computer - properties - advanced - start up and recovery - settings - system start up.

Just open up the boot.ini ...it's right in the root of your C drive. Windows+E to open Explorer, double click C, double click your boot.ini, copy and paste the contents of it here so we can see it.

no ini file

Post by skyman »

i did the above and there is nothing in my boot ini file? I did a file search for boot.ini and found a c:WINDOWS/pss, opened with wordpad and this was there:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

Is this what need's to be copied into my c:windows/ini file?

That is a good boot file for a system that only has one boot option and is strictly IDE. One thing that is confusing me is where you got the file, you must uncheck "hide protected operating system files" in folder options to see it. That maybe some cached version but it is what it should look like.
