Laptop can't find IP address
I haven't seen this before. Up until yesterday my laptop would pick up an IP address with no problem on my home network or at my office. Today it quit gettin an IP. If I assign a static IP address it works fine. Go back to DHCP and no joy. Tried different Ethernet card and same problem. It is a Dell with XP Home. Have tried uninstalling adapter and let XP find and reinstall. Got any ideas?

so when you set it to "obtain IP automatically" it just doesnt get one? What does it show when you run ipconfig /all from the command prompt? Have you tried ipconfig /renew?
Right click "My Computer", then select "manage".
down under services, make sure the DHCP client service did not get disabled somehow. If its just not running, try starting it by using right click again..

Thanks for the input. No joy on those ideas. It will not renew. I have "repaired connection" and during that process it reports that it cannot renew. funny thing is that the first time i booted I was able to renew. I thought that I would reboot and see if it would obtain IP itself. It did not and then whould not renew manually. I have just finished burning my files to disk and have done a reformat. As much as I hate to do it it is about as easy to format as it is to fix some problems.

I am still interested in ideas in case I see this again.
Dunno...NT usually doesn't blow up the TCP stack like Win9X often did. I've seen that happen lots with 98...just clearing a few registry keys fixed it, or removing/reinstalling TCP. But with NT...really don't see that problem. Perhaps NIC drivers got hosed? Had some bad mal/ad/spyware in there like New.Net?
