What size powersupply do I need.

Post by ScrewU2 »

I now have a 250w powersupply but I know soon I will need a bigger one which is a good powersupply in terms of wattage.

I can't find any larger ones for Micro ATX.

I think I have a Micro ATX anyways I have a Emachines T1742 and I want to know what the cases form factor is too. It does not seem to have enough expansions slots on it to eb a regular ATX but I guess it is possible.

Emachines?

lol....

good luck finding a PSU...I believe their PSUs are proprietary..not 100% sure though...

get a new case....then you can get a REAL PSU

<edit> why would you need a new PSU in the first place though?
if the comp is working fine..

if you plan on upgrading the machine, you'll prolly be getting rid of almost every part of the PC/Comp anyways....
I suppose you could keep the HDD, I'd still use it as a slave at best though..

so you're wanting to upgrade?..eh..

I used to have an Emachines..they're really not all THAT bad :p

I suppose it would depend on the specs of the machine, and if you want an immediate improvement or not..

chances are that later on down the road you will be upgrading the motherboard, and might need new RAM...if you're happy with the performance of the PC for now..

I would suggest a new case and PSU, and a HDD at the same time if the budget allows it..

Then Motherboard/Proc/RAM/Video Card
those are prolly going to have to be bought all at once as well...
but again that depends on what you have in there now...
if it's an earlier P4 S478 chip you can prolly keep the proc and upgrade the mobo/RAM/Video Card

for the video card, you prolly have onboard video right now...

<edit>
I looked at, and found the specs of your comp.

I retract the previous statement...

it will prolly not take PC3200?..
or PC2700?..

so if you get a 256 or 512mb stick of PC2100 RAM (not sure what the max is the mobo will support) that should help perf. a bit...

but the NEW RAM will be wasted on a new board later on down the road.....

Ok just one more question. I have never installed a new mobo beforer so does all of the integrated stuff function on power on or does some sort of driver have to be installed first?

huh?

so you're going to do a new mobo first?

hopefully IF you were to buy a new mobo it wont have everything integrated like the one you have now..

BUT
Most of the time everything does work at power on/bootup although once you get to windows drivers have to be installed for stuff to work correctly...
this only applies to onboard graphics as there is no need for anything else to function at the bios level...

I a going to upgrade the case and get a AMD mobo with AGP with an AMD Athlon XP 2400+ 2.0ghz 266fsb and have everything integrated until I can buy a better GFX card like a Geforce FX or Radeon 9800. Also the integrated graqphics on the mobo I am looking at at newegg has 64MB Video instead of the 32MB I got now.

The case also has several fans and a 400w PSU is that enough?

Have you considered a SFF set up like Shuttle? That might help your budget a bit. Most of them have everything on board wich will help your budget.

Shuttle

The only real problem I see for future upgrade is there not a Shuttle that supports a fsb of 400,533, and 800. Just a thought.

nope all wrong you are going to need a 2500 not a 2400... also an abit nf7-s mobo... some generic ram sense your on a budget probably just a cheap pc3200 stick at some local retailer. Even though you want interegated you don't want no graphic card soldered down... i would just use an 8mb card till you can afford better lol.. You probably cant afford a 9800 anytime soon so the 9600 non pro 100-130, 9600 pro for about 130-160 or the 9600xt 200-230. Those are all great cards no geforce cards... geforce is bad, to bad my ti 4600 don't work or id give it to you.

personally i would get the ram first, I don't believe an abit nf7-s is backward compatible with sdram so having the ram first then the motherboard, then the processor, then the graphic card.
If you won't stand behind the troops then you can trying standing in front of them.:thumb:
