Old laptop to less old laptop

Post by VIKTOR2020 »

The video card died on my old laptop and I want to transfer all its programs to a less old laptop and run them from there. Can that be done with Ghost?

Ghost will image your hard drive to the new laptop...everything as it is. Problem with that, is the new laptop will have different hardware...and the old hard drive will have Windows installed and configured from your old laptop...with it's old hardware.

So upon first bootup, plug 'n play will detect TONS of new hardware, and once up to desktop...appear to be running in something similar to safe mode. New video, new sound, network, tons of IDE devices and other motherboard components, etc etc etc.

"Technically" you can grab the latest drivers for all your hardware, and install them, and "usually" get Windows to settle down and appear to work fine. But this is far less than desirable...often leads to a rather buggy and troublesome installation of the OS. Sometimes it appears to "behave OK"...other times it acts up on you, occasional lockups, errors, failure to shut down properly. And other times the difference in hardware is just too much, and it never boots up that first time.

Some things can be done to help this a little bit...like uninstall all the hardware you can ahead of time, then shut down before transferring drive. Other times...reinstalling Windows back on top of itself can help..a little.

There are 3rd party utilities out there, like Aloha Bob's PC transfer or something like that. In my opinion, they really don't work well.

But in my opinion...I try to stay away from this as much as possible...as I prefer a nice, clean installation of the OS, and a nice clean installation of the software. Data such as e-mail, documents, etc etc..they can be transferred and imported.
