omg, just finished watching Canada Vs New zealand.

68 - 6 . I'm angry because canada don't even get the basics right! Get the ball at pace but nooo, they stand around and wait for it. High tackles! Tackle under the waist!! sheesh.

Canada always went for the dummy! they just walked right by! Oh man they did so many mistakes. Ah well, new zeland is a good team but canada should've done better if they kept to the basics.

Where's your national pride?
Your team spirit?
Your support for these gladiators of international Rugby?

because you at least showed some interest and went to the website:
Japan has a team that puts everything they have into the game . So far they have played 2 games in our Tropical Nth Queensland town and played well. Lost both, but played well. Some very european Japanese team members in the side. LOL

No I do not catch the matches. However, the only person I actually knew that played Rugby broke his collar bone the first two minutes of play during his first ever match.

That person was my brother-in-law when he lived in England. lol Sorry Tim.

The All Blacks are dominant not surprising that Canada got killed by them.

Everybody has their own "nasty bruce" Immy. ;) Hope you didn't suffer much pain.

Safer than football?? Not at National / State level.

On ya Dave U. A follower at last!!
What about Cricket?? Follow that as well?

JCOS... I ididn't think you would have the spare time anyway Patrick. ;) You at least know a bit about the game, yes?

We Aussies play the All Blacks every year and they also field a League team in our National League competition. They haven't a chance.

There have been some very large scores and surprises a well.
Seems strange, we are hosting the World Cup for Rugby and there is an Ashes tour for Cricket as well. Spoiled I guess.

Nice to see some interest. :D

BaLa, what team? I'm guessing Germany :D I don't know why. Maybe it was decided not to come down.

Next game here is France & Fiji on Thursday night. Daughter has had tickets for all games supplied free through work. Talk about lucky.

EVeryone I know out here is from the UK or New Zealand, and thats all they talk about. My Irish friend wanted me to come out and watch the game at the bar last night. But on top of not being into sports I don't even know the rules! Too much to brush up on for one set of matches, I figure.
I was in one of the hosting cities when the world cup came to japan last year, so I learned about the teams and watched the tournament. Thats my big contribution to learning about "not-popular-in-north-america-but-hugely-popular-elsewhere" sports.

Sounds like quite a scruffy performance from Scotland, but I guess the result was never in doubt Scotland 39 : USA 15.

If you think the world series is hugely popular in north america, you're kidding yourself. In Canada, maybe 1 or 2 out of every ten people you know might watch it. You can't even see it if you don't have cable.

The comment was more aimed at the naming - seems somewhat ironic, and somewhat condescending, that something that takes place exclusively in North America should be called the "world" series. Life exists outside of North America.

MLB has tried countless times to bring baseball to other parts of the world. It worked in two places, Latin America and Japan/Asia. Since we have the best of what those places have to offer and baseball isn't played to the level its played here anywhere else....then the World Series fits nicely.

Oh yeah, I dont follow Rugby. :D

I dunno...if the blue jays can win 2 series in a row I think the Tokyo Giants could swing a few. Plus if MLB was international a lot of players like Ichiro would probably stay in Japan.
Everyone was laughing at the Japanese when they started playing, but the truth is they're producing some killer players right now.

Those Toronto teams were Great Teams. and no The Tokyo Giants really wouldn't stand a chance. Like I said they cant go international because there is no intrest. The World Series is what it is The BASEBALL WORLD series.

What do you mean there's no interest? From other countries, or just America? Japanese people would freak out if their teams were eligible for the world series.

Where do you think players like Ichiro and Matsui come from? I'm not saying japanese teams would come in and cream them, but I don't know if its fair to say teams with players like that wouldn't stand a chance.

When the name "World Series" was chosen for the baseball championship, it was essentially a game of US interest. Indeed the rest of the world has shown interest in the sport, it becoming an olympic event is additional evidence of that.

The discusion of baseball is of course irrelevent to this thread.

Well, its about how most of the world is obssessed with Rugby and Soccer, and there are these huge global matches followed in bars across the planet, and meanwhile back in the US/Canada we have our own little sports and give them names like "The World Series".

I was amazed at the world cup. It made the Olympics look like the women's basketball league. Billions of people were obsessed. And it wasn't just the team that had the most money, it really was nation against nation. I'm not condoning soccer riots, but it was easier to understand what all the fuss was about. If you watched a match in a bar packed with, say, irish fans, the energy was palpable. I thought, "where has this been all my life? Why don't I know anything about my own country's team?"

Its all good. Its not like we gotta scratch each others eyes out over this :)

But worthy of non-Americans taking cheap shots, eh? :)

Well, if it wasn't the truth, which it is, maybe you could take it as "cheap".

But considering I'm talking about my country, and my ignorance about Canada's team, I don't see how it qualifies as a "shot".

I'd get into the Japan baseball stuff too, but like you said, you don't want to talk about that.

I'll just parrot my first post and end it as dude is right, not a baseball thread. There are three places on earth where baseball is played even close to the same level as the U.S. The united states IS the baseball world. Hence the world series. Over the years its been tried again and again in other places and has always failed to catch on strong.

What?! It did not realize that cheap shots were inherently untruthful.

I do believe it was in2deep that made the "World Series" comment first......

then I'll start it up again like you just did and point out that baseball did "catch on strong in other places". Baseball is more popular in Japan than it is in the States.

Sorry, I thought you were talking about me when you said the bit about cheap shots by non-americans. My fault, and thats the last word :)

Baseballs a cult in Japan. When I first went there, everyone would shout "Ichiro, Ichiro!" when I said I was from canada. As in, "Hooray! A guy from the same continent as the country that Ichiro is playing baseball in!" Thats how far people would go to work him into the conversation.
