New Chiller in the werks

Post by LT-73 »

Well, finally got the new piece i'm going to mod for my new chiller. It's a Westinghouse Custom 20 De-humidifier and lemme tell ya, this thing freezes water! I also got a small 180Gph pump named Little Giant pump, lol. With the help of tspaulm, we took the coils, sunk it in a plastic square tub about 8" high full of regular water and toss the pump in to see how much heat the pump will generate and how fast the water temp would drop. In about 30 minutes of operation, the water got slushy and the pump locked up! water temp dropped to around -7.5c ! I had to unplug the pump and turn off the dehumid machine so the slush would melt some! That shiznit was awsome! one minute water flowing, next thing the sucka just turned into slush! lol

I just fired it up again and in less than 10 minutes the water's temp went from 27c down to -0.7c ! man this is gonna be great!

Ok, this sucka just went down again to -2.3c !!! Time to turn it off.

Tigress is commin over tomorrow for a week so i won't be able to do any werk modding it. I'll prolly take it apart and clean it since it's been sitting in a basement for a long time. Full of dust and dirt and you know me, it's gotta gleam!

I also have to get more pipe insulation then i have to condensate proof the mobo, blocks and lines for this badboy.

I'll post pics and keep you all posted on it's progress. Dunno what it will be called, but it'll have a name no doubt.

Now after i get my sub-zero temps and start the insane ocing, who should i go after first?...hmmmmmmm I am hungry for some fish fillets tho ;) :D :rotfl:

All i did was remove the bracket holding the coil and submerged it along with a Little Giant pump rated @ 180Gph. You can see the swurl in the rez. You can also see a thin black wire on the far right, that's the temp probe. taking this shot i noticed water temps @ -3.2c !! After 10 more minutes it dropped to -7.0c. More than enough chillin power for the Nebulous. Some small mods are:

Clean up and lube up of fan motor ( lots of dust in there :eek :)
Better rez with a lid ( maybe another pump, not sure)
A nice paint job and LED's ;)

I have to get more 1/2in tubing for the lines. Evrything else i have for condensation proofing. I'm gonna try to keep the integrity of the dehumidifier, just minor cometics.

And de-humidifiers are friggin expensive to run, definatly not ecologically sound with the electricity it will eat

Tanx n00b :D
Actually this particualr machine is much like a samll AC Chris, and I live in a large housing complex. It will eat as much juice as a vapochill or a prometia. It's just like a fridge. Has a thermostat and will shut off when it reaches a certain temp. I had set it to something 5-5 1/2 which keep the water's temp at 0c. Left it on overnite and the water is still at 0c !! Talk about chillin like a villian !!:2cool:

I need some tubing Pronto!! ;)

Aw chris, you say the sweetest things! ;) :D

:rotfl:

I'm conducting a test to see how long it takes for the chiller to freeze water even with a submersed pump moving the water.

I'll post the results.

Add automotive anti freeze, you should be able to take it down to -35 or so

Ok, here are my findings and results from my test:

11:40am= I start the chiller- 17c water temp ( ambient)
12:15pm= 0.0c
12:21pm= -1.7c
12:25pm= -2.5c
12:30pm= -3.1c
12:35pm= -4.2c
12:42pm= -5.0c - water froze up at this point. Turned into slush so thick the pump could'nt pump  Talk about chillin like a villian!!

So whatcha think? Cold enough ? :D

It's either anitfreeze or straight methanol (windshiled wiper fluid)

I'm gonna go with straight up methanol (Windshield wiper fluid) since it doesn't thicken under xtreme cold. The anti-freeze gets thick and the pump can't run it, eventually slushing up.

Don't forget the dialectic grease. You do this right and you'll have your fillets.Do it wrong and you'll be having crow.

Don't be in a hurry.Don't want any glaciers to fry expensive componants.

Can't wait to see results!

Yeah fish, i have all the stuff from my last freezer experiment that went south. This is what i have at the moment:

DieElectric grease
Rubber Silicone
Insulated Pipe wrap ( for the blocks and lines)

I still need fresh 1/2in tubing and more pipe isulation plus a few gallons of methanol, waterwetter.

I already see the outcome .

Didn't see neoprene sheets in there.

The Pipe insulation wrap takes care of that and the little tiny spots will be filled in with silicone.
