Iraq Rebuild May Cost More Than Expected

Post by axtrader »

The news regarding the financial and economic impact of America's involvement in Iraq keeps getting worse. Here is an article from Monday's Miami Herald....

U.S. Taxpayers May Foot Larger Bill For New Iraq

BAGHDAD - A shortage of money is seriously hampering the U.S.-led effort to rebuild Iraq, and American taxpayers may end up footing a much larger bill than they expect, according to members of Congress and top U.S. officials in Baghdad.

As they plan for next year's budget, American officials in Iraq are worried that they won't have enough money to restore enough basic services to get the country's economy growing again. That may be true even if Congress grants President Bush's request, expected in the next few weeks, for another $2 billion to $3 billion on top of the $3.5 billion U.S. taxpayers already are spending this year.

The hell with rebuilding Iraq. Shouldn't they ask taxpayers what they want to do with their money? Let the people here decide if we want to rebuild Iraq. After all, american citizen tax payers greatly outnumber government power.

Well of COURSE it'll cost more. Does anything ever end up costing less when the federal government is involved?

Let's see...$8,000 for a hammer, $13,500 for a toilet seat....etc.

The average Iraqi citizen was responsible for 9/11? Thank you for pointing out that little piece of information that slipped by me. And all this time I was thinking that it was the work of a terrorist group which has its roots and support among countries like Afghanistan and Saudia Arabia. Then again...since Saddam seemed to enjoy Al Queda's work so much, perhaps we shall lump all Iraqis into the "terrorist" definition, as we all know one can be guilty by assosciation...
</sarcasm>

We tore it down, and now we have to build it back up. That's just a part of war that people need to accept. And as Burke pointed out, does anyone honestly think any government expense would be LESS than the estimate? I mean, paying a company like Halliburton isn't cheap. ;)
