The most accurate test of your connection is a fast reliable FTP server such as these two:
OOL FTP Speed Test
ftp://ftp1.optonline.net/pub/test64
AOL FTP Test
ftp://ftp.newaol.com/aol6.0/179902/setupaol60.exe
A small file download or java based test is not very accurate.

A small file download or java based test is not very accurate.
I got 218 KB/Sec.
Then I proceeded to install the program.
Not!

.........It's a very innacurate test, the absolute best test is a large file download from a fast reliable FTP server, any small file download or picture is way off since the first part of your download is buffered to your RWIN and not actually showing you your actual trasfer rate. It's the same as when you start a large file download and you get that "burst" of speed, it's the data being buffered. This is why everyone thinks using such a high RWIN is better, it simply buffers more data and when testing as most people do on a test such as this it shows your speed as very high, even higher than your caps a lot of times. But if you test different RWINs using a FTP file you will see that the value you find using the proper formula (caps * max latency / 8) your speed will be much better.

As the note that comes with our speed test suggests, it's just intended as a guideline and affected by many variables. It is as good and as inacurate as many other online speed tests. The best way to test would be to download large files from a distant server (not your ISP's)...
With the current test file size of 200KB and 3000+ hits per day, the SG speed test generates the following traffic: ~600 MB per day, ~18 GB per month... We simply don't have enough spare bandwidth to provide a larger test, imagine the impact if we increase to a 10MB file... It would require ~900GB per month !!! (with the current number of hits).
Mnosteele, our test starts immediately when the page is hit, so the impact of RWIN caching is minimal, it still has to go through the pipe to you.
