Microsoft Grants 2nd Stay Of Execution To Win98!

Post by minir »

Hi to All

Saw this in Fred Langa's Newsletter just now. Thought some might be interested in it. I am for sure :)
=========================

As recently as about two months ago, Microsoft pegged June 30 2003 as
the shutdown date for Win98 support. The basic plan was that, as of that date, two weeks from now, Win98 would no longer be patched, updated, or bug-fixed.

(See http://www.informationweek.com/story/sh ... ID=8700301 )

But sometime in the last few weeks, Microsoft quietly extended the date.
This will affect tens of millions of users worldwide!

Now, the "'nonsupport" date for Win98 has been rolled back 6 months to
Jan 16 2004, and the new "end of life" date has been pushed back to Jan
16 2005.

This is the second time Microsoft has pushed these dates back, which---
on the plus side--- suggests MS is being receptive to its customers'
needs: The company probably was getting tons of negative feedback on
ceasing support for so enormously popular an OS. On the other hand it
also suggests that MS may not be seeing the rate of XP upgrades it hoped for; and/or may be fearing that users will defect to Linux instead of moving to XP. Keeping Win98 alive at least keeps those users in the
Microsoft fold for now.

In any case, this buys a little time for those still using Win98. At
some point, the OS will cease to be supported--- eventually, there won't
be any more patches, updates, and such--- so if you're still using
Win98, you still need to make concrete plans for the future. Sooner or
later, the lights will go out on this venerable OS. But at least there's
a little more breathing room, now!

Good afternoon fastchevy & Ghosthunter

Perhaps this offers a glimmer of insight into MS's thinking...Do you Think :D

They know of every Win98 user out there and also what other MS products are installed on their systems. As long as this OS user base continues to invest in other MS technologies...then they will support it.

Hi UOD, John & dud89

I assume there are still those resistant to Win2K & XP that will stick with 98 as long as possible. I'm one. MS would in my opinion be foolhardy to simply drop them. They after-all are still Customers.

It's like Ford saying we will no longer service Fairlanes. Makes no sense to me.

Thanks for your input Fellas

i have one win98se system. does this mean that if i reformat it, i won't be able to update/patch it via their "Windows Update" option? If not, can i download "only" Win98SE updates/patches somewhere on the site?

You still should be able to. they are extending their support of 98....they probaby wont' be putting out any new patches, but will have the old ones still available.

Good to hear since I still use 98 at home. Wish the would continue supporting IE 5.01 sp2 and 5.5 sp2. Oh well can't have it all.

Thanks for the update.

Hi jeremyboycool, Hopeful & YARDofSTUF

jeremyboycool, won't argue that point, but 98 still suits alot of people and they just won't switch till they absolutely have to.

Hopeful i run days at a time without a shutdown and never have a crash. A lot depends on What your adding on i think. Usage also i suppose. Norm here is a diehard 98 Fan also. He's the " God of DOS " We Humour Him ;) :D

YARDofSTUF my Buddy blacklab is a case in point. He has some Software that will not run on 2K or XP, so must use 98 as well. A lot of people are running all 3 in their systems.

I keep thinking of Dual booting, but am lazy. :D

Thanks Fellas and Have a Good one.

hmm maybe microsoft will make 98 open source to it doesnt have to update it anymore. and it would be free and happy. Bill Gates if you wana do something nice for the world there it would be. Id ask him to do 2000 but that would be too nice.

Hi Onethenumber2, Paft, The_Lurker & chevyman282

Thanks for your replies Fellas :)

chevyman282, we have a lot in common in this regard. :)

It's the Comfort Level of operating a system you know and trust. The ability to repair any little thing that may go wrong from time to time without having to tear your hair out doing it. I'm backed up to the gunnel's :)

I've tried 2K and may Dual Boot at some point, but for now, to Hell with it :D

Have a Good one Guys & Thanks again for taking the time :)
