Why do yall overclock?

I hear all the time about peoples motherboards dieing and cpu's frying and everything else, i dont overclock and have not had to replace one thing, i mean you risk killing something just for a few more hundred mhz?

Yeah, and it is hard for me to notice any improvement in overclocking. i upped my pentium 4 about 400mhz and i did not notice any improvement, just problems with my bios reading the speeds incorrectly and forcing me to change them back to default

why do people mod cars?

why do people like power tools?

why do people compete?

yadda yadda yadda

its the same thing since the dawn of time, it just keeps getting applied to new things as they are developed

lots of reasons really though, people oc for different reasons, one of the most common ones is that there is always more performance you can squeeze outta your system, tweak it to make it faster

people like to get the most out of their dollar, so you can buy a cheaper cpu but yet oc it to a higher one, and get more performance

etc. etc.

list goes on and on, many reasons

When I overclocked my P4 2.26 to 2.51GHz and my 9700 Pro for Unreal 2 I definitly noticed a difference. It helps a lot, just don't go all out unless you know what your doing, or you have enough money to replace...

I overclocked because I was able to buy a 2400+ XP processor and clock it as a 2700+ processor.

The 2400+ sells for about $80.00 and the 2700+ sells for about $135.00

This is my 1st time o/c and I did not go overboard. I just wanted to try to save a couple bucks. I am not experiencing any problems right now. Temps are good and machine is as stable as they come.

When i tried overclocking i noticed no help at all,and i can understand why people mod cars and stuff it actually makes a difference, i mean if i had the money i probley would overclock just so you can try and beat that other person by those few mhz.

overclocking makes a difference, but there are many variables such as the amount of your overclock, and the applications/game you use, some aer more vid card limited, some are more cpu lmited, so overclocking either can have different effects in different games, there is a difference, but its relative to you and what you use

just because you didn't have a positive benefit from oc'ing doesn't mean other people dont

i have my cpu and vid card both oc'd, for a year now, no problems what-so-ever, and i have faster performance in the stuff i do then i would at default speeds

ok, sorry didnt mean to offend anyone just wondered. Well whenever i upgrade ill try again because when i tried overclockin all it did was give me more errors and lock up more.

because i'm buying the same as the high end, they just throttle it down..so i throttle it back up where it should be and save the cash.

Exactly

My 2500 runs faster than a stock 3200. Now if you OC the latest chip you are essentialy ahead of the curve. Besides performance is why higher rated chips cost more money.

i see huge improvements after ocing for intensive applications.

e.g. video encoding to divx takes hours less after a moderate oc

I've been overclocking since I learned that on my old Pentium 75 changing the FSB of the motherboard from 50 mHz to 66 mHz made it an instant Pentium 100.

Then on my 166mmx learned changing the multiplier from 2.5 to 3.0 made it run at 200 mHz.

All 5x rigs in my house right now are overclocked, my workstation at the office is overclocked, I've overclocked every rig I've had. And I've yet to cook a single one. If you buy quality hardware, and do your overclocking carefully, wisely, done right...there's no problems.

Wether it's clocking a few extra mHz, or squeezing an entire extra GHz out of them like you can with the P4 2.4C (she'll do over 3.5GHz)....the performance is free...it's there for the taking.

Now if i could get a 2.4 at 3.5 now theres a reason to overclock, i guess my xp2200 just wasnt a good overclocker.

amd cpu's oc differently then intel cpu's

amd cpu's have a higher IPC for one thing

The previous athlon core topped out at roughly 1900MHz with normal adjustment (LT-73, with his mad talent, could squeeze the last bit of juice out of a chip).

The recent cores have routinely topped 2300MHz and can go even highly. Like cyPHer_138, I have a 2500+ running at 3200+ speeds. This is a sub-100 dollar chip with a 512 cache matched with a Asus A7N8X deluxe (129 USD), you have a killer setup.

The P4/800 core is another dandy overclocker. You can have a 3.5GHz chip for the price of a 2.4....

I would like to stress the cool the 2500XP+. These chips readily o/c over 2200MHz (2300-2400MHz typical) with a 200+ FSB and dual channel DDR yields marvelous bandwidth. I have cut back severely on my folding machines, however this box has been carrying the load shockingly well.

the core...
2500XP+ @2200 (Will go to 2405, however I prefer to keep the temp down.)
Asus A7N8X Deluxe (nforce2/400)
Geil 2X256 low latency DDR

I overclock my system for two reasons:

1) More bang for the buck

2) I do Video editing with special effects and the extra power really cuts down the rendering times.
