Just a headsup.
If your XP tells you there is an new update don't allow it till some time passes, and you read up on whether or not it has caused any problems. This type of problem seems to be getting worse, especially for XP users.

I got burnt by MS about a month ago. I updated and next thing I know I am spending as long as 10 minutes from bootup to get to my desktop. I never thought about an update being the problem ... and ended up reformating to fix the problem. Shortly after I found out that the update I had downloaded was the culprit.
After formating ... I downloaded the SP1 only ... I have not touched anything else on that site since. It has made me gunshy.

It would actually cause the machine to hang at shutdown.

64bit, I'm curious. Did that #811493 update fix itself by removing the old one, and installing the new one by itself?
Or did you find out about it, and manually remove, and install the good version?
I'm wondering if given time it would have fixed itself, anyone know?
No I have Auto Update Disabled. What Happened was I made my weekly visit to WU and installed all critical updates after casually looking them over. Upon reboot I start experiencing a dramatic slowdown when clicking on shortcuts to open apps and when traversing directories in Explorer. I had no clue as to what it could be as I havent installed any apps recently that would run at start-up and the only thing I had running at start-up was norton. So I sat there and thought then did a google search. After a few reads it became clear that that paticular update was "bad". You could tell cause the shortcut icons would stay depressed for up to 5 seconds until the app finally opened. So I uninstalled like suggested in the articles and all was well. then I kept tabs on it and its seems microsoft fixed it last week sometime. I havent installed it yet,im still a bit gunshy...
Im not sure if it would have fixed it self or not. I would imagine as the new version is on the WU site now .
She's presenting like a mandrill!
One of my clients got that update and all the icons on her desktop would disappear when she walked away from the PC. They would re-appear about twenty minutes later.Originally posted by 64bit

It was as though it slowed the desktop refresh down to a crawl.
It also caused her printer to not work. Once it was removed everything was normal again.
Good read, thanks Norm.
What have we learned from this episode? First, never update software on a Friday. Seriously. One reason Microsoft sends out its security bulletins on Wednesdays is so that your IT department is around to help you if there are problems. Second, don't count on Microsoft to keep you informed when something goes wrong with its software. And third, we've learned that you shouldn't download a Microsoft update until it's been around for a few days, just in case it shuts down your Internet connection--or worse. Sadly, that's the reality of Trustworthy Computing.

My computer is running just fine....Ultima Online and Battlefield function perfectly...Its folding as happy as can be...No updates for me thanks...

I want a computer so good it must be used for evil. I want to walk out of Apple SoHo with a golden aura. I want anti-gravity bluetooth. I want a computer that chases squirrels and steals your picnic lunch. I want a computer that gets bored while I'm at work and prank-calls Microsoft tech support. I want WiFi control over my coffee maker. And my roommate. And the cat. I want the ability to hijack passing iPods. I want a computer that reduces fat while locking in savory chicken flavor. I want four on the floor and a fuzzy 970 chip hanging from the rearview. I want an Airport station that cleans my laundry with sonic waves. I want a keyboard with gold teeth. I want fries with that.

Windows update has hosed my Win2k server install twice in the past two weeks. I'm getting really tired of it, and I don't know which critical update it is.
I'm getting ready to do my fourth format/install of my server this month. I need my pc running big time so that I can get to my office and other things.

I have no need for that POS and the crap it loads on your PC. My last XP install is still hosed after an update (DX 9, SP, and all security patches). That was all following a brand new install of XP.
I don't know which one messed it up and I don't care. I haven't booted XP since that day and it's been several months...
Perhaps I'll visit that update site for postarity. Lord knows I don't need it for any OS updates....

Simply run adaware, spybot, ZoneAlarm, HijackThis, AVG, update windows daily, have a router, don't open e-mail, turn off action scripting, don't use P2P networks, don't violate EULAs, and wear a condom to get Windows secured.

AAAHHAHAHAHA!! Apply patch to "improve" your O/S, another M$ "hidden feature", hilarity ensues. So typical. No wonder even Steve Ballmer is selling his stock in M$...
