During the outage I was getting DNS "not found" errors for all of the *.speedguide.net subdomains.
My vote is for DNS issue on provider end or expired registration (less likely)

Server crashed and burned... Had to do a clean install of everything, took the techs at the NOC a day to install Linux... Then I had to configure all services and reinstall from backups... Meanwhile changing DNS since there is not enough time in the day for BIND as well... Still working on getting everything 100% operational.

re the server:
"crashed and burned"
Seems odd that took a whole day just to install Linux, which is usually a pretty quik install on a server.
May want to check if your Host runs any type of monitoring app and check the logs so as to trace the actual cause. We have sites at Rackspace with backup hard drives. All boxes are monitored and all failures get logged.

Definitely looking into it, I've been on their a@#$ all the time, looking into alternative colo as well. Good advice, as always.

I didn't think it was SG at first, thought it was the DNS prob/issue that I once had with WinMe before. I said to myself, "Awww S#!T not again, this is one of the reasons why I switched to WinXP!!", but when I got the same error at work (no SG.net) and then went home to check if I can pull up Yahoo!, then I knew what the prob was. I got SG.net set as my homepage,...Who doesn't?
Glad that you folks got the issue somewhat resolved, great job Philip. I am much happier now
So how have you folks been?

it has been nearly 72 hours for me with no SG. I was going through withdrawal. I visited many other places with my spare time though.
Glad to see things are back to normal for the most part.
May want to check out Sharp Web Innovations, this is also my host. Of course I know one of the owners so it helps a little for me.

It was weird not knowing what was happening. Maybe there should be an alternate SG emergency site where news of problems could be posted.
Or if not, maybe a toll free number with a soothing voice on the other end telling us, everything's gonna be alright.
gonna be alright.
calm down
gonna be alright
alright.

OK, heres the real reason. We don't have enough Folders so we thought if we took the site off-line a couple of days you guys would give in and join the team!
TonyT,
We would have done things differently had we known... We were told Monday AM that a Linux tech would be there soon. (The server is located near you.) Finally the so called Linux tech showed, however couldn't do squat except waste a couple of hours. Basically, the most feasible chance to get live again was to format and clean install.
However, the dipstick...er... tech... couldn't config an IP and said that we would have one by 1st thing Tuesday AM. Lying ba$tard!
Tuesday, while waiting for this butthole, Philip leased a server here in Tampa, however we had to wait for the deal to finalize, get IP's, etc...
It was decided that whichever company gave the Ip first would be where SG would be installed...
Well, finally the install was able to start on our server up by you, which is what we are on now. SG will be installed on a leased server here in Tampa and we will test connections, latency, etc., and decide where to host the server...
Hind sight is 20/20... Not knowing and being lied to is the suXor!

I was thinking the same damn thing..in fact, I kept visiting other SG spinoff's to see if there was news. Fortunately I emailed Brent over at the [H] site to get an update.
We need to make a list of everyones email and icq/aim/whatever handle and keep it on a different site. I'll donate some of my space for just that purpose.

I was on ICQ & Aim alerting everyone in my list... (Yes, I am invisible, however, I alerted everyone that was online...

You guys send me your ICQ, Aim, email, phone numbers, etc., in case it ever happens in the future...

I kept goin to the SG chatroom, but no one was there. Then I got an idea and emailed UOD, he set me straight. Since SG is my homepage, I thought my whole connect was belly-up, at least till I really woke up and saw my activity light blinking. Do do that to us Philip!

Thank you ... thank you ... thank you. WHEW!
If I came home tonight and could not get in here ... I did not know what I would do. I was jonesin' like a mofo! You just don't realize how badly you are hooked until it ain't there.
I had to get some games and stuff out to play. Had a really bad few days.
Was glad when I came home tonight and headed over here and it actually worked. Caught me right off guard.
P.S. Just realized that my count is down. Showing 2574 ... was over 2600 when this happened. Guess I will have to do some smapping to get it up there again.
